My_whey reports on HORRORFEST!
I just got back from the theater for day one of Horrorfest. I'll break it down movie by movie, give you my review and keep it as spoiler free as possible.
Movie 1- Reincarnation
Ahhh, what's not to love about Japanese horror? Especially when it focuses on the supernatural and, even more so when the director is Takahashi Shimizu. The plot revolves around buddist beliefs in reincarnation. An aspiring actress named Sugiuri, gets offered a part in a big budget Japanese horror film directed by one of the greatest Japanes horror film directors. This will really put her on the map, so she excitedly takes it. Minute she does, she starts having visions and seeing ghosts, the whole bit. It is most def a Shimizu film with the scares, however, I was very relieved that this was not your regular Japanese horror film. That's right, no creepy dark haired woman in a white dress moving like a contortionist down the stairs. Instead, you have almost Zombie like ghosts and a suspicious little girl ghost that isn't really scary, but gives you the chills. The ending to this film was great. It has a nice twist that I didn't pick up on right away. Great way to start the show.
PROS- Typical Japanese horror. Starts biting right away and doesn't let up. Also, it wasn't dubbed, but subtitled! I was amazed as dubbing usually ruins a Japanese horror movie.
CONS- Very cultural based subject and could be difficult for some of us Americans/Canadians/Not Japaneseians to wrap our heads around

Movie 2- Unrest
Unrest takes place in a cadaver lab during the first year of medical school. Allison is the new kid on the block having just been added to the class from the waiting list. She, of course, gets teamed up with a bunch of horror cliche' male types. A jock, a 'nice guy' and the religious type that you have to have in a horror movie. So, they get a cadaver that seems to be alive. Often, she is warm to the touch and, at one point, even breathes! I didn't know this, but this movie was shot here in Salt Lake. I really wanted to like this movie, especially after all the buzz it was getting with it supposedly being the first film to use REAL BODIES!!! <Thunderclap>, but it was just plain miserable. The acting was bland, the SFX were not impressive at all, the script was all over the map... just terrible. The audience was laughing through it, and not in scenes where you would expect them to. This movie was just awful. It reminded me of a really bad SciFi horror movie. A couple of the directors friends were actually in the crowd and were asking people who had come to the show if they would recommend it to their friends and if they would rent it. One of them said about it: "From a film making standpoint, he did some interesting things. The film itself though was-- well-- I'm not really sure what it was." LOL! From one of his friends! Sad.
PROS: The lead character is hot and there are some decent tension building scenes, but they never fulfill their promise.
CONS: Can't even begin to start. Just a waste of celluloid

Movie 3- Dark Ride
Dark Ride was the ****ing bomb! This was, by far the best of the night and definitely the movie to beat. Like most of you reading this, I have watched a LOT of horror. ****, I've even seen Carnosaur 2! So, I like all flavors of horror. Some of my favorite horror flicks are the cool, cheesy little 80s gems like My Bloody Valentine and Prom Night. Dark Ride attempts to bring that same, cheese oozing feel to the screen and it succeeds. Easy opening and plot for you, a pair of twins start the show by going in to the dark ride and getting hacked to bits by a serial killer living inside. He is stuck in a sterotypical insane asylum and, shocker, he escapes. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, a group of college kids decide to take a road trip to New Oreleans for Spring Break. On the way there they find a brochure for the Dark Ride. They go in, the killer has come home, he puts on a creepy mask and he starts hacking them to bits. The scares were intense jump outs just like the movies I mentioned above, and the killings were at the top of the gore scale. I can't say enough good things about this flick. I laughed the whole way through. It really brought back memories of those old 80s gems that we miss and I loved it for that.
PROS: 80s feeling schlock at it's best. Creepy ass mask on the killer. Gory killings. A decent plot line and even a predictable 80s style ending.
CONS: May turn off some people who want to take their horror seriously. If you don't like cheesy 80s horror, stay away.

Both Reincarnation and Dark Ride have been optioned by LionsGate, so they should make it to DVD at the least. In fact, Reincarnation is available for purchase from YesAsia, but it costs 30 bucks, so I would probably wait on it.
So, there you have it! On the agenda tomorrow:
The Gravedancers
The Abandoned
Penny Dreadful
Who else has been to horror fest?
