Most Dangerous Road in the World (pics)
The road is located in the South American country of Bolivia. It consists of 43 miles (70 km) of dirt and rock heading north from La Paz, the world's highest capitol (altitude 12,000 feet or 3,660 ?m), to Coroico, a beautiful cloud forest town at the rim of the Amazon basin. Its catchy nickname is due to the 26 vehicles that fall off the road per year. About 200 people annually lose their lives here. A fatal accident every fortnight is not uncommon on the Coroico road (the July disaster brought the death toll during the previous eight months to 55 and in 1995 the Inter-American Development Bank declared this, the world's most dangerous road. The only road that exists to get to the Amazon from La Paz, it is carved into the sides of a canyon. It can have vertical drops for 1,600 feet and has no guardrails. Consequently, most Bolivians take the time to pray before their descent. After all, it could be their last.

if 26 vehicles fall off a year but 200 die. that means that each truck carries about 8 people?? i doubt there are many head on crashes that result in death and dont roll off...

Im sure those guys driving those trucks get paid **** too even though they are putting their life on the line. It shows you how desperate they are in third world countries. the government cant even put up guard rails? thats ****ed up. Imagine driving through that at night time when the rain is pouring.

That is insane... Imagine meeting another car half way. They'd be the ones backing up... Hopefully they have two routes, but it doesn't look like it.

nah..most of them kill the other guy that's blocking..(they both try to take each other out) and the one that lives...they gather their little mexican friends and push the other vehicle down the cliff. That's the way I see it.

1. BUSES rolling off the road
2. I believe it's more than 200 people per year a few years back.
EDIT:
Quote:
Every year it is estimated 200 to 300 people die on a stretch of road less than 50 miles long. In one year alone, 25 vehicles plunged off the road and into the ravine. That is one every two weeks.
It is the end of the dry season in Bolivia. Soon the rains will come - cascading down the walls of the chasm. Huge waterfalls will drench the road - turning its surface to slime.
Then will come those heart-stopping moments when wheels skid and brakes fail to grip. There are stories told of truckers too tired - or too afraid - to continue, who pull over for the night, hoping to see out an Andean storm. But they have parked too close to the edge. And as they sleep in their cabs, the road is washed away around them.
This is not the place to drop off.
|
Also, the road goes from an elvation pf over 14,000 feet to a thousand feet. That's just insane.

I saw a documentary about that road. There was this one guy who was on a bus with his family and a bunch of other people and it went off one of those cliffs and killed about 20 people, including his wife and kids. He survived. Because the body of his son had not yet been found, he took another bus to the spot and that one went over the same cliff! Another dozen or so people were killed and he (again) survived. Now people think he's cursed and he's not allowed on the busses.
His son's body has never been found.
