Engagement Ring/Wedding RIng
I'm not buying anytime soon, but are these two the same rings, or do you buy a different ring for each time? And if they are 2 different rings do you have to spend more than one on the other or the same price?

they are 2 different rings. SOme places you can get both at one price like walmart. and girl buys the guy' s ring. but the guy gets his ring when they are married.

Yup, that's about right. The engagement ring costs more. Supposed to be like 2 months salary I think. Big thing now is sets that include the engagement ring and wedding ring.

Say if someone spends $5,000 on an engagement ring; how much would the average guy typically spend on the wedding ring?

If you want a decent ring - Walmart is not the place, sorry. Just like a lot of their other products, in order the keep the price 'low' they use inferior materials....the finishes commonly used on their products often wear off.
I've met a few people who've developed nasty infections due to the 'rub off' brazing and infecting their skin.
Other stores might be just fine - JcPenny isn't too expensive, neither is Kmart - and in all my years of metal smithing I've never seen problems coming from their pieces that I have from Walmart.......but that's just my opinion.
...My first wedding ring did this - it was a heart-shaped two-piece diamond band from Walmart, and now I have a heart-shaped two-piece diamond band permanently brazed onto my finger. I had to spend quite a bit to replace it the ring.
----------------
Wedding bands/rings are commonly sold in matching sets - priced together.
However, some wedding/engagement rings for her come in two pieces that lock together - you buy them both, propose with one part for the engagement and then the wedding band connects to it when the time comes...most people get them soldered together after they're married.
If you don't want your ring matching hers then you can just buy them individually - a lot of wedding rings are priced individually and in sets.
It's customary for the man to purchase the rings - because it's, also, customary for the woman or her family to pay for the wedding (fair trade, if you ask me - especially if you're having a large traditional ceremony that can cost thousands)
However - depending on your ceremony (if you have one at all) it's not uncommon for each to pay for the other's ring.
A good metal-smithing friend of mine does some unique work and he's not too high on the price - all of his pieces are hand woven and of high-quality. It's world-reknown for his knot-work bands:
Five lead ring - would be considered more femme....seven lead ring would be more masculine (it's wider) ... and since he does all of his work by custom order he weaves it to your exact ring size.

As my future father-in-law told me "there are 3 rings for a wedding, the Engagement ring, the Wedding ring and the Suffering"

don't buy a set, I bought my wife a set ie the engagement and wedding ring fit together to make a set (obvious huh). My missus lost her wedding ring, probably on purpose so I had to go out and buy her another two rings, plus I forgot about the eternity ring (I think I got scammed bigtime)...
just tell her you want a ring tattooed to her finger, that way unless she loses her finger you are all set

Well I'm going to propose this week...
The way it works is that you buy the engagement ring, and then right before the wedding you go in and they put this "Add On" band to it...
It's just the same basic ring just with the extra thin band or two, with maybe some accoutraments, like small diamonds etc...
The Ring my girl picked out was a Grand, and then the Wedding Add on when I go to get it is another $200.

I bought an engagement ring with the wedding ring and she has been wearing the engagement ring since Valentine's Day. I am just holding onto the wedding ring.
And for the record, my fiance will NEVER, EEEEEVER start ****ing my brother. That's for damn sure.

what I did was buy a solitare and gave her that as a engagement ring. Then we went out to find her a wrap that she liked. Kill 2 birds with one stone

I was just like "pick the diamond shape, pick the setting style, pick the setting material and I'll do the rest. Oh yeah, and pick a date."
