Muslims beaten up in UK mosque; widespread riots feared

Police are appealing for calm after four men were beaten up in a mosque last night.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of racial assault after police were called to the Eccles Mosque on Liverpool Road in Salford, Greater Manchester, shortly before 9.30pm following a report of an attack inside the building.

One man was taken to Hope Hospital but has since been discharged. The other three men were only slightly hurt and did not need hospital treatment.

A 37-year-old man from Eccles and a 19-year-old man from Davyhulme, Trafford, were arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated Section 37 assault and racially aggravated Section 49 assault.

Chief Inspector Geoff Wessell, of Salford CID, said: "Greater Manchester Police take crimes of this nature extremely seriously and a thorough investigation is currently under way.

"I would appeal to members of the local community in and around Eccles to remain calm, behave responsibly and let police deal with the incident and those responsible for it."

An Islamic youth organisation, based in Manchester, blamed politicians for the attack tonight and said the local community was "extremely fearful" they were not even safe inside a mosque.

Mohammed Shafiq, from the Ramadhan Foundation, said: "This is another example of Muslims being attacked and persecuted - and the responsiblity lies with the politicians who have been on a feeding frenzy attacking Muslims and giving ammunition to thugs' hatred towards us.

"The responsibility for this lies with the likes of Jack Straw, Phil Woolas and others who believe it's open season on Muslims.

Mr Shafiq said Muslims in the area were scared.

"We used to see attacks on the street but now we're seeing them in the mosques - people even go into a holy place and attack us.

"People are extremely fearful now, especially the elderly people.

"People think they might be attacked on the way to the mosque or even inside while they're praying."

Mr Shafiq said he has urged local Muslims not to respond to the attacks and tried to reassure them.

"The police are dealing with the situation and that should be enough for us."

He added: "So far it does not look like an organised campaign. The police have told me that no pattern of attacks has emerged and I have told people that."

Phil Woolas, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, dismissed claims that his controversial contribution to the debate about Muslim veils had fuelled the religious tensions behind the mosque attack.

The Government's race minister said: "Any such attacks are appalling.

"But I don't accept politicians' comments are to blame for this. That would imply there haven't been attacks before which, of course, there have been."

Last weekend the minister said Yorkshire teacher Aishah Azmi's refusal to remove her veil in class meant she could not "do her job", and insisted that barring men from working with her would amount to "sexual discrimination".

The leader of Salford City Council said the council would be liaising with local police to ensure Muslims felt supported.

Labour councillor John Merry said: "I am very concerned to hear about these attacks.

"Eccles is a settled community where, thankfully, incidents like these are very rare.

"We'll be working closely with Greater Manchester Police to see if there is more support we can offer people in that area."

Warning Over UK Race Riot Danger

The polarised debate over full-face veils could spark race riots in the UK, the head of the Commission for Racial Equality has warned. The issue "seems to have turned into something really quite ugly", Trevor Phillips told the Sunday Times.

"This could be the trigger for the grim spiral that produced riots in the north of England five years ago," he said.

Labour MP Shahid Malik said the issue was becoming "deeply corrosive" and that extremist parties would benefit.

Jack Straw, Leader of the House of Commons, recently sparked a media debate by saying he preferred women not to wear full-face veils at his surgeries in his constituency because he believed they made communication difficult.

Stories about a Christian British Airways worker wearing a cross, and a Muslim teaching assistant wearing a full-face veil in the classroom, have also made headlines.

Mr Malik called the debate over the past couple of weeks "raw and ill-informed".

He said: "The main beneficiaries from this debate - because it is having a corrosive impact - will be the extremists, the British National Party, and organisations like al-Ghurabaa and al-Muhajiroun.

"They would want to divide this society and to exploit it and to create mayhem, and our job, mainstream Britain, mainstream society, is to obviously not allow them to do that."

Mr Phillips said the polarised debate over race and religion risked a repeat of the Burnley and Oldham riots, adding: "This time the conflict would be much worse - we need to chill."

He told BBC One's AM programme people the debate surrounding Muslim women wearing the veil had begun courteously but deteriorated.

"We need to have this conversation but there are rules by which we have the conversation which don't involve this kind of targeting and frankly bullying."

Mr Straw feels that covering faces can make community relations difficult

Mr Phillips drew comparisons between Britain and the racial tensions in France.

"We saw it in France last year where the French allowed north African communities to grow up completely separately, not feeling French," he said.

"Eventually that frustration, that exclusion boiled over into the kind of car burning we saw last year...I do not want that for Britain."

On Mr Straw's comments, Mr Phillips told the Sunday Times Muslims leaders had been "overly defensive" in attacking the Blackburn MP.

Massoud Shadjareh, from the lobby group the Islamic Human Rights Commission, told BBC News 24 that "ministers after ministers after ministers" had been attacking the Muslim community recently, which was unfair and "not a means of respectable dialogue - I have to say the Muslim community really has been extremely calm, and extremely responsible," he said.

The Muslim Council of Britain's Secretary General, Muhammad Abdul Bari, said the integration debate had become "increasingly shrill and ugly".

He accused Mr Phillips of having a "poor track record" on this issue and criticised him for not mentioning recent attacks against Muslims which "accompanied this so-called debate".

Mr Abdul Bari said: "We have seen veils being forcefully pulled off Muslim women and Muslim individuals, including an imam in Glasgow, badly beaten up by thugs."

Conservative shadow home secretary David Davis said Mr Phillips was right, adding that it was "absolutely necessary" to have the debate.

Well it doesn't really bother me because I live in Scotland which isn't really effected by the diversity disease. Exept in the large citie, which I'm miles from, I only see white faces, except the the pakistani's who run the local shops (that's no **** neither).

Down in England though, they are everywhere, what really gets my back up, is that these muslim peices of **** (the majority of them are muslim, they have the least integration will) that come here, take the governments money, we build the f*cker's grand mosques and when ol' Straw asks them to take off a viel, there's an outcry.

I'd say all other people's do fairly well interacting with the general public, black people are very nice, eastern europeans.. very nice people, it's these muslim's that want to come over here and make their own litle mini-muslim state where their religous law prevails over the law of the land... makes me sick.

This by all means doesn't apply to ALL muslims, just the minority, which is still a big number so so goddamn many came here.

So she had a job right, but left due to her circumstances, meaning she was willing to work. Its not like she (1 out of those millions in welfare) would make any difference

lol, I saw a story of five US CITIZENS trying to claim asylum in the UK to better their lives........

thing is whilst they were being processed they were getting free benefits etc. One of the head employees at the Asylum Office in Britain actually quit at how stupid the system is, since it expended far too much $$$ on processing asylum seekers.

Muslims have immigrated to many European countries, yet it seems that those with the most are having the most headaches......

Maybe, just MAYBE that means it would be a good thing to halt their immigration? I'm just throwing it out there........

OK let's get one thing out in the open here, even though you didn't say it. I am not hating on muslims. That is, the decent, hard-working muslim people who come here, semi-adopt the English "way" and co-exist peacefully with our people. I am hating on these certain immigrants coming to this country, illegally (or legally in some cases) and sitting on there asses and collecting a welfare cheque. I thought alot of foreign mosques were financially supported...

Its always good not to give welfare out so easily. I was reading how a lot of welfare consumers had no reason to claim welfare except being lazy to work.

But you have to understand, its not only MUSLIM immigrant that's causing the problem of welfare but rather ALL IMIGRANTS from all races, all religions

Very True. The thing about, especially muslims, is that (proven by recent events) they really don't want to integrate with the British people. Jack Straw "asked" the muslim women "asked" the keyword here is ASKED, and was met with fury.

The idea behind this is that we could all become one and learn to love each other and respect each other, I think the niqab, to the British people, is too far out.. like "Wow, what the hell is that" kind of thing.

But obviously the muslim woman really don't want to help britain, they do what they want, and you'll be damned if you oppose them.

Welfare = every working persons taxes. I don't like my money going to lazy person who's capable of working, I don't mind my money going to a specific person who can't work because of specific circumstances.

Also, as I'm aware of, although majority of those who claim welfare are immigrants, there are also those native born who also claim benefits
