Christians in Texas held a rally this week, condemning hip hop as "a culture of hypnosis" and destroying hip-hop CDs and DVDs

Wednesday August 2 saw hundreds of Christians gather outside a church in Arlington, Texas to destroy huge piles of rap CDs, DVDs and hip-hop related clothing, magazines, posters and videogames.

The demonstration was part of a conference held at the fundamentalist Cornerstone Baptist Church, whose pastor Rev. William Dwight McKissic has previously caused controversy with his virulently anti-gay stance. Now the Reverend has turned his attention to rap music, citing two murders in Dallas hip-hop clubs as the catalyst.

After listening to his sermon, a congregation of several hundred churchgoers gathered to watch a bulldozer destroy the CDs and other hip-hop paraphenalia. Hip-hop website www.sohh.com quoted one as describing hip-hop as "a culture of hypnosis, brainwashing kids into mimicking degrading values".

Well I agree with them a little bit. Mainstream hip hop is uteer garbage. It definately is a tool to brainwash (for lack of a better term) the youth. Many kids think acting like a thug is cool. I used to be one of them, and I spoke like them, dressed like them, acted like a hoodlum.

I never got any respect and I always wondered why. Then I finally realized that appearences make a huge difference. whether you like it or not its true. You need to play by the rules of the game in order to suceed.

I still love some underground hiphop and some guys like Mos Def, Immortal Technique, dead Prez, etc. guys who do socially concious music.

would have been more effective to focus on all degrading forms of "entertainment" and not totally throw all of rap under the bus. it was once said that if you don't stand for something, you will fall for everything. The entertainment industry has gotten way out of hand in regards to morality and the propagation of this way of life being the norm. What we hear and see does play a part in who we become and what we do. I think the church would have benefited more from introspection and teaching it's congregation about how to handle this impact rather than a "burning". That's a little cliche' and "hey look at us". Don't make a spectacle of your position, live your position for others to see.

And these are fringe groups of Christians, who are extreme in every way shape and form, they don't represent the Christian religion as a whole, as much as many people try to label them as doing so.


I also agree with them when they say that it is a tool to brainwash youth. Personally every time I hear most hip hop or rap songs it makes me want to break whatever is playing it anyways.

I don't like rap music either. However, I'm not going out and start destroying things. That isn't a good message a church should be teaching people, especially children. I vote with my dollars. Anything that I don't like that I see or hear on tv or the radio, I can always change the channel.

Like I said, I dont even like hip-hop and rap (especially mainstream, just awful) dont they have anything better to do. Maybe some hip-hop artists/rap dont like to listen to jesus-praising songs, they dont go protesting it.

Also I do see a point about morals and such, but what do they want the rappers to do? Stop making the music? Rap about worshipping Jesus? Like someone above said, I hope they dont represent all of the Christians around

I live about seven miles from that church. Atheist that I am, f I had known about that I would have bought a couple and added to the pile. I hate rap and hip hop and all that it stands for.

Having said that, I'm sure the rappers and hiphoppers don't care whether this stupid church crushes those CDs. They were bought and paid for, and the presses just churn out more of that crap.

BS, I think you're giving kids too little credit. I grew up around both gangsta rap and the general culture of being a criminal. Funny, both my bro. and I turned out just fine and realised it's just music and that that way of life is just idiotic and will get you killed. These parents are just looking for an excuse as to why their kids turned out as crappy members of society. It's naive and stupid to think that burning a few hundred CD's or trying to ban rap music is the answer.

I haven't read your posts but I just find it rediculous for Christians to do that. Obviously they are not "Christians" with that kind of behavior. Don't blame the religion blame the people. I don't like these types of people. They don't live the Word of God. Rappers should deserve respect like everyone else despite what they say in their songs. All we need to do is educate the young people about that culture, we show them paths but they choose whichever to take. It's entirely the parent's fault for lack of educating their children.

Will Smith has gotta be the best rapper I know, haha . I like clean rap, it shows talent. I bet one who cusses most of the song would probably sell as much as Will Smith. But then look at the type of people who'd purchase them.

It's also stupid to (I dunno how to say it) discriminate the whole genre rather than the individual rappers, because rap/hiphop branches off to different types, just like how Christianity is branched, but then when grouped together they are just considered "rappers" and "Christians" even though not everyone is the same.

Generalizing hip/hop as being entirely bad and a major problem with America's youth is placing the blame in the wrong hands. All of the entertainment industry can influence children. However, its the parents, aunts, uncles, teachers, coaches, older siblings, neighbors, counselors, and verying other community leaders responsibility to teach kids what is good and bad about what goes on in society. Not every child has all of these things in their life, but most children have atleast 1 adult they see on a semi-regular basis at best. The responsibility falls on them to show them ALL aspects of life and popular culture.

The idiots who burned hip-hop CD's etc are missing the point of what they should be doing.
