Sushi
Just wondering if anyone had some insight on the good and the bad when it comes to eating sushi. I work next to a Hannaford's and often get salmon sushi for lunch. Is this okay? I have heard that eating too much can have a bad effect on your body like high mercury levels.
Good Source of Protein?

Depends on what sushi you are eating....lots of sushi has mayo, spicy mayo, avacado and such in it, which aren't very good for you....but if you keep it simple, tuna roll, salmon roll, etc with some low sodium soy sauce and some wasabi and you're good to go....
i love sushi, but only eat it maybe once a week as I normally get tuna rolls.....you should really only be worried about the mercury content in tuna as it is high, so don't over do it....
another good thing is to substitute the white rice with brown as most sushi places offer the option...

It is great for a bulking diet but I would not have it if you are cutting very hard to keep track of your totals

Your diet must be very bland if you don't even use mayo. And avacado is bad for? That's news to me. So I guess you don't like any healthy fats?

No ****. Fresh slices of chicken on whole wheat bread with avocado and pepper is one of my favourite things in the world.

no it doesn't. only cali roll has avacado in it and there are only a hand full of different rolls that have mayo. out of the thousands of different types of sushi, maybe 0.05% have mayo or avacado.

Avocado is great.
The problem with sushi and sashimi is the white rice and the soy sauce. You should never use soy sauce (sodium).
Replace the white rice with brown rice, and replace the soy sauce with vinegar mixed with wasabi or ground ginger for dipping.

I wouldnt say it's a 'problem'. Personally I can't stand soya sauce anyway so I dont touch it. And in my opinion, the only time a person should be overly concerned with sodium is when they are prepping for a contest. The white rice - sure, it has a higher GI and is more processed, but can be fit into any diet if planned right.
I have it once every couple of weeks, sometimes once per week and it fits in great.

I used to get sushi from Hannafords, and you can get the nutritional facts online so you can fit it into your totals.

The amount of white rice in sushi is minimal, and when combined with the high protein of fish, the GI is significantly lowered. Sodium is not the devil either. Why people are so afraid of it is beyond me. If you're active, you need more electrolytes like sodium in your diet than the average desk jockey(which is why the 2,400 mg RDA for sodium doesn't fly). In fact, it's mainly the ratio of potassium to sodium that you should be aware of. Consume more potassium(avacados have twice as much as bananas) to balance it out.
Sodium does not cause high blood pressure, but if you have HPB, then you should watch your sodium intake. If your healthy and active, stop avoiding it like hell!

I didn't mean to suggest that sodium is the devil (LOL), but we're talking about soy sauce. Just a little soy sauce contains more sodium than you can shake a stick at. If sushi were a breakfast cereal, then soy sauce would be the milk. But I completely agree about the potassium:sodium balance.
I will mention that it's my opinion that white rice and white flour are the devil, and should be completely avoided. But, I'm one of those people that don't advocate cheat days, ever. I believe in 100% strict. :-)
