N and S Korea guards trade fire

North Korea, South Korea Exchange Gunfire Across Their Border

Aug. 1 (Bloomberg) -- North Korean soldiers fired two shots at a South Korean patrol post across the border late yesterday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. South Korean soldiers fired back six rounds, it said.

The North Koreans fired the shots at about 7:35 p.m. yesterday Korean time, with one of the bullets striking a wall of the patrol post. There were no injuries in the incident, it said. The patrol posts on the border are less than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) apart.

``We are investigating on what precipitated the incident,'' the South Korean statement said.

The incident is the first involving both sides firing shots across the border since Oct. 28. South Korea fired warning shots at North Korean soldiers on May 26 when two servicemen advanced about 20 to 30 meters (65-100 feet) across the military demarcation line.

North Korea and South Korea remain technically at war since their 1950-53 conflict ended without a peace agreement. They are separated by one of the world's most fortified borders, with 1.7 million soldiers facing each other.
