New guy here, and I need all the help I can get!

Not sure if this is the right section of this forum to post in, but here it goes.

I am 21 years old, and I am fairly slim. I am 6' 3" and about 150lbs. And I have no clue as far as to what to do or even where to start on a total body image change.

Here's my story. I never really got into muscle building in high school due to the fact I was discouraged after being laughed at in the weight room. After high school, I really didn't think about weight lifting all that much until I encountered a situation similar to one in high school, but this time it was when i was swimming, and someone made a rude comment about the way I looked. So, long story short, I am awfully embaressed of myself, refuse to swim, and am self-conscious about going to a gym. (I tried it a few times, but felt as though everyone was looking at me).

So, I am sick of seeing myself the way I am and I want to do something about it, and I am wanting to try the gym thing again, but this time, working with a place that is more one on one with me.

In all honesty, I hate my genes. Haha. I am tall and very thin, but yet, I gain no weight at all and I eat like a horse. A lot of people around me hate the fact that I can eat so much and not show for it. (Well, I hate it too, because I cannot gain any weight no matter how hard I try).

So, what are some good programs to learn about? I really want to work on my arms, chest and abs. I actually want to look like a normal guy, but have no clue what to do. Tomorrow, I am stopping at the local gym to price memberships and check out the place.

All the advice and help is greatly appreciated.

-Zach.

That's good advice. The madcow site has a lot of good information on it. I went from being 5'8" 114 lbs. to 170 lbs. but it took me a long time because it was all trial and error, and I wasn't fortunate enough to have resources like this. One thing I would suggest is to keep a food journal. You may think you're eating like a horse, but I'm willing to bet you're way under where you need to be. You should calculate it using your BMR, but just guessing I'd say you need at least 4000 calories a day to gain. ALso focus on Deadlift, Bench Press, and Squat to build your program around. Don't waste your time trying to hit the chest from 15 different angles. Seek out advice from people who have gone from being very skinny to putting on weight.

It could be bold statement to make but I don't think deadlift is good back exercise. Quads and hamds are doing most of the work. But not the the extent of actually working those muscles to the limit. You might as well just squat, or do stiffegged deadlift for those muscles, instead of basicly "cheating" for you low back.

If you are going to do work your quads and hams AGAIN on back day, when they're supposed to be resting, what good does it do? For low back, erectors muscles there are plenty of exercises exist beside this much-revered deadlift. I won't deny it could be useful once you are massive and need one crucial move to contract all your muscles, but other than that I don't see any benefit of deadlift!

Horrible advice. Just horrible advice.

1. Quads are not worked to any appreciable extent when doing deadlifts.
2. What other method would you use to progressively overload the erectors?
3. If you place back and leg workouts on opposite ends of the week, your hams and glutes will have fully recovered.
4. The deadlift is not a "back" exercise, just like squats are not a "leg" exercise. They are enormous compounds that require almost all your muscles to perform properly. If you want an isolation exercise, do the hip adductor. If you want a move that will build strength and mass all over your body, do the deadlift.

hey bro...dont let others get youd own and CERTAINLY dont put yourself down

let me tell you something about "skinny" people....I have been around the gym game for a long time....when a skinny person does manage to put on just a few lbs of muscle it REALLY helps them and they usually have a great natural shape....you might never be a mass monster like a 5'8" guy might be, but you will look great in a suit etc, lol...seriously

and seriously man, forget what other people think....you are being WAY too self conscious.....when it comes down to it most of that is in your head.....because 99% of the people in the gym are so worried about what THEY look like that they arent really paying much attention to you
