Aloha
In early July I decided to drop everything in Los Angeles and make a move out to Hawaii. Three weeks later, here I am living in the southern region of Maui in a town called Kihei. I was looking for a change and a lifestyle readjustment and I found exactly what I was looking for here in Maui.
It's such a different feel here on the islands than back in the mainland. In a country so homoginized and Americanized it feels great to absorb a little local culture. There was much hostility and racisim back in the 80's here but now, visitors are welcomed with the aloha spirit. Hearts and minds have changed and it's opened a new world to those seeking a little more excitement.
The pop culture bubble the LA perpetuates is nowhere to be found here. Nobody wears Deisel jeans or Prada sunglasses. It's sandles and board shorts even to the bars here. Much better on the wallet and closet space. The locals drive older cars and you can always spot the tourists by their newly rented mustangs, Jeeps and convertibles.
There might not be any major corporations in Maui but it's rich in tourism and the serice industry is the largest market and there are always jobs available at the resorts and activity tour groups.
The locals get nearly 80% the golf greens fees and there are many local discounts available to the locals living and paying taxes here on the island.
Much of the land on Maui is untouched and undeveloped. It's a shame to see such a beautiful place go so unknown but that's how the locals want to preserve the island's natural tranquility. The cost of living here is actually less that people percieve. Rent is lower but food costs are a little higher. So it evens out. Definately lower than California. And traffic is not neary as bad.
I've noticed the biggest difference with Maui vs. Los Angeles is the mentality. People migrate to Los Angeles in search of furthering their careers and professional life to make more money. People migrate to Maui to enjoy their life and try to find a way to support their active lifestyle rather than letting their careers define them. I am a believer in the latter.
I haven't been on the internet much. I don't even have my computer shipped out here yet. I'm not even watching TV much anymore, there is just too much world out there to stay inside and pace the cage. Last week I went kiteboarding, snorkeling, spear fishing, hiking through lava tubes and cliff jumping into fresh waterfalls. Not to mention, there are new girls here every week from the mainland looking to have a great time so I gotta go take care of em...
Mahalo.

Congrats on the big move. i visted Maui 2 years ago and went back again this past April. The moment I leave the place I can't stop thinking about it. It haunts me daily, so I'm very jealous of you. As a Canadian it's not to easy to just pack up and move there but I'v been trying to figure out a way and it is in the 5 year plan. Keep on enjoying the great weather, wonderful people, and sexy b-roads

I have a few part time jobs lined up and I'm just waiting for my interview on Monday with a marketing company out here. If they offer me a position, I can see myself living here for quite a long time. The car situation is the only problem. My Camry is in LA and I'm renting a ride now for $150/week.

Got a job working at night and weekends, now I just kiteboard all day and work at night. Life is peachy here on the rock.
I finally figured out what it means to "get your sh*t togther" - It means simply getting up every day and making the RIGHT choices. What's going to benefit you most, your health, mentally, pysically, spiritualy etc you get it done whatever it takes. It's hard eating clean and going to the gym or running in the morning, but I know what will happen if I don't: NOTHING.

aloha my friend...
I love Hawaii, it will always be my homeland. I grew up here, lived here since I was born, but unlike some people, I got no hate towards skin color. I joined the Navy to get away, but I know once my career is done Im going to live here til I die. Currently, Im in the Navy reserves, have a good looking Hawaiian girl, and attend college all paid for by the US Navy...Life couldnt get much better here. Have fun on Maui, you should get a 4x4 and have some fun.
