Looking for people who are willing to participate in an outdoor jogging challenge
Fellow BBers!
Anyone up for an outdoor jogging cardio competition? Yes I know I failed in the last one I tried to organise. (First to admit it was too hard on my CNS)
Ok, we are half way through summer and if one can’t' take opportunity of the brilliant weather and do outdoors cardio, when else could one do it?
Forget the indoor treadmill, elliptical machine, bike and the rower. Do the real deal and put on your running shoes and hit the road
I could list all the advantages of jogging outdoors i.e. better scenery, improves bone strength, breathing fresh air, no chance of receiving your typical indoor infectious bug from other gym users, and most importantly proven my researchers less chance of boredom.
The Competition -
So here's the deal, we have no set number of weeks of for challenge but a 6 week minimum would be fine. We could come to an agreed set time once we start.
- Each participant does no less than 3 sessions a week
- Each session should be no less than 25mins. (If you run of breath then stop, pause the timer on your watch, get your breath back and carry on) You would still achieve the same result (fatless) it just means you take longer.
- Each session is 10 points,
- Each participant is placed in a group of 2, 3 or 4 pending on the number of participants
- There is weekly leader board - individual and group leaders
When to do cardio -
Personally, I would do my cardio first thing in the morning taking BCAA 30mins before I start. I'm going 'old school' every boxer looking to cut fat does this while they train for a fight. It's a tried and tested method. They hit the road 5.30am every morning for 6 - 8 weeks and it does tremendous wonders. I can only speak from personal experiences.
When do we start? - When we have a sizeable number of participants 12+
Have you got what it takes or would you rather do your cardio relaxing on an incumbent bike and watching you favourite TV program?
One more thing, if your are going to do this - get the best running shoe out there. Asics gel kayano is the best in the world no question about it.

This sounds like a great idea. Count me in.
By the way you are totaly off base with the best running shoe. That title belongs to Brooks Adranaline.

Sounds goood, there's lots of trails around my area suited for running (long as you can side-step the dogs and out-juke the bikes) and I prefer it to being stuck on a black machine with monotonous bleeping red lights any day.
As for the best runner, it depends on whether you want speed or distance, there's a whole range out there suited to each. The distance shoes are more chunkier than the lightweight sprint shoes. But Rocksmtu is right, Brooks do do some stunning shoes that are terrific. I want a pair myself.

lol - there's definitly NO best shoe.... everyone's feet are different. My feet, for example, are genetically jacked up! flat footed and everything. Brooks sneakers messed me up big time, and i thought i'd just break em in, but i ended up limping everywhere i went lol. i switched to saucony omnis and in a few days i was running pain free again. The omnis are my shoe of choice - best bet is to go to a running store and try on different pairs and see what fits right for you.

This statement is 100%true. I tried on about 6 different pair of shoes bvefore I choose my brooks. A dedicated running shop is the place to go if you have one near by.

That makes sense but we don’t want catabolism and I have to take into account people who would struggle doing 25mins. However, your point, it makes perfect sense with regards extra motivation and for one looking to beat a previous record of their as the weeks progress.
Maybe something like this?
25mins - 10 points
35mins - 12 points
45mins - 15points
But I want to put the cap on 45mins for point scoring. But good idea.

True, but come on you really cant compare Brooks to Asics. Saying that, if one goes to a running shop and has their gait analysis tested they might come up with the right shoe. The thing about Asics Gel Kayano is it's abilty to mould into ones runing style. I had the same problem with you, i bought muzino ( purley for asthetics reasons) After a week jogging i was in pain. Pound for pound ask any runner or shop keeper who produce the best sneakers and the name they would come up with would be Asics.
But hey enough of shoes, i only pointed it out becuase it's important to get the right shoes prior to running.

I did my 25 minutes today. Give me my 10 points......
I was thinking that the points should be per minute then we can keep track of how many minutes we ran in a week/month and have a way to keep score. Just a thought.

It sounds great and I would like to join. A question though, I already run now but I do only two sessions a week because I have ankle problems and I try not to stress them too much. I know you said 3 sessions a week but would 2 be okay? I do around 36-37 min each session so I can make up for the points lost in one less session. I hope it won't be a problem and I think this is a really good idea.

I would join if the weather didnt suck so much here(Central Illinois)
I just bought 2 new pairs of running shoes 2 weeks ago too and have barely had a chance to use them because it has rained so damn much lately.

Unfortunately, there will be no running outside for me. I live in a bad neighborhood. My fellow runners would be people running from the police. I will stay indoors.

It shouldn’t be problem, like i said, anyone one less than 3 times a week provided they have personal reasons i.e injury is okay. I'd even put an asterix next to your name. Be careful with your joints though. What caused you ankle problem? Have you checked to see you have the right running shoes If you haven't then I suggest you got o running shop that provides a free gait analysis of your running style to see what shoe suits you best. It's very important.
Good luck

I need a decent number of people 14 - 16 would be nice we start on the begining of the week once of we get the required number of participants which in this would be 14 - 16+
Rightnow we have: 10 confirmed and 2 unconfirmed
1- teewoods
2 - KidA
3 - RocksMTU
4 - Max Protein
5 - GrndPndr
6 - Megin
7 - DAISYGRL79
8 - Texasboy7
9 - FootballYAY
10 - rdryden *awaiting confirmation*
11 - Boom782 *pending on weather*
12 - IEBravo
At this rate it looks like this coming monday I'd be pairing the groups into 2 people per group. By sunday night everyone would have their team/ buddy. I set up a thread every week, where once you have done your cardio you post your times down. By the end of the week i add everyones personal score and post the results ( in a new thread for the following week) Each result would show the leaderboard of each group rankings and each individual ranking.
Pending on the type of person you are paired with, you might be at the top or the bottom of the team rankings. However individual rankings are in every persons control.
It looks like the race to the top of the leaderboard starts this monday
I take it many have their BCAA? and a decent running pair of shoes? Xtend is my personal choice for BCAA.

Actually, i'd keep track of everyones minutes. I'd post the total minutes they have run at the end every week.
The only thing undecided is how long this is going to go on for. I'm thinking 6 - 8 weeks.

Question~~ I am trying to get pregnant in a few months and my goal is to really tone up. I used to be a personal trainer, so I am still in good shape, just trying to really bring out the muscle tone. I am 5'3 and 110 lbs, so my question is about the BCAA and how good of an idea it is for me to take those if I'm going to be pregnant in a few months. Just thought I would ask. Thanks

Sorry to evade DAISYGRL's question (sorry, I have no idea) but I did around 25 mins yesterday, according my running watch (it's only a ****ty Casio one) I did 3.7 miles. Not too shabby.

Taking BCAA's on empty stomach spares your muscle and makes utilising your body fat for fuel at a greater rate.
BCAA as no effect whatsoever on ones Hormonal balance. It does not increase ones test levels neither does it decrease ones estrogen levels. You should be fine. If you need females opinion verify this from the ladies forum and you’d get confirmation

Hi,
Where are you getting deployed to? It's no problem. If you want to post your times and just compete individualy without being grouped fine. The thing about the group thing, have done a similar challenge on this forum 3yrs ago. One or 2 people might upset their groups dynamics by quiting or not taking it seriously. However, most people had an extra incentive to keep up by not letting their group down. By the way, i was in the winning group
I'm under the assumption you'd still be doing road work even when deployed?

I've already been doing this for the past week.
I'm running six days a week approx 1.5 - 2 miles.
I don't hold to much stake in the fasted cardio phenomonon. I run at night and it's great because I have all day to stretch out my muscles.
New Balance also makes awesome shoes. I had a pair of NB's for my entire basic training and AIT and they held up wonderfully. I'm wearing some Asics now and they seem to be doing a good job.
