Well dont get a VHS anything because it is old technology. The advice I have for you is to stick with the low end of the high end stuff. Meaning good brands that will last. Sony, Panasonic..Even though you are paying for name, I feel that the quality is good too.
I've heard ok things about liteon products, some people seem to have no problems with them where as some have alot of problems. Search around and look at customer reviews.
Advantages of having a dvd recorder is actually quite good. You can record shows and movies right to dvd. You can even hook up your vcr and convert old movies to dvd too. Dvd's are easier to store than thoes old VHS tapes.
Your disadvantages would be twards dvds themselves. Like they are easier to break, more moving parts=more to break.
Overall I would say go for it, but do your research, read reviews, and happy buying.
