Family giving me ****...for living a healthy lifestyle?
Hey guys,
Over the past couple of months, I have been living with a lot of stress simply because of all the "crap" people have been talking about my lifestyle. I am constantly getting criticized for "eating 6-7 times/day" and how I eat the same food almost everyday.
Just to give you an idea...my diet consists of this
Protein...chicken breast, turkey breast, tuna, egg whites, lean beef
Carbs...Brown rice, sweet potato, oatmeal "large flake 10-15min baking one"
Fats...Flax oil, olive oil, blanched peanuts
I eat approx 3790 cal on training days (300p/470-480c/65-70f)
on off days I eat 3290 (270p/360-370c/70f)
Basically I enjoy living healthy, eating right, training like an animal, getting sufficient rest (8-10h/night), and all I get is ****, **** and more **** from ppl I'm close with.
Last night I finally snapped on some of my friends and basically said...let me tell you something, go to any doctor, and let's compare my diet with yours, and we'll see which person he agrees more with. I guess my main issue is I hang around ppl who just don't understand/relate to what I am doing. Right now I'm doing a clean bulk, and many people are telling me weekly that they see physical changes (looking a lot leaner).
I just want to know your thoughts about this, and see whether I'm the only one who goes through this.
Thanks guys.

Eating healthy and working out is a pretty demanding schedule that does interfere sometimes when you have people around you. I used to cook for my family more than my wife, but that has changed, as my kids have gotten older and they don't always want to eat the same stuff I do. They're sick of chicken lol.
The bottom line: To hell with anyone who doesn't like my lifestyle. I'm doing this for myself. Suffer the pain of discipline now, or suffer the pain of regret later. Your friends are probably more envious of your commitment to health more than they are annoyed by it. They will be the ones who suffer the pain of regret later

I appreciate the quick reply. It's funny because not everyone gives me crap, it seems like only my true friends understand what I'm trying to do, and where I have came from. I used to be severely overweight (lost about 180lbs) and now I'm trying to gain mass.

I think that is just the way that a lot of people think. They think that you are starving yourself or not eating properly if you don't eat frozen dinners and canned foods. When I was cutting I got down to about 195 and everyone thought I was on drugs. Real nice people. Of all people in the world to think that I am on drugs. I eat healthier than any one of those people that thought that. They worked at a certain place and would go eat fast food or restaurant food EVERY day. They started getting quite hefty. When I worked there I was a bit chunk too. Then I left and went WAY down. A lot of people are jealous and a lot of people just don't understand. I eat more than they do but because I get off my ass and move and eat healthy, I look better.
Just the way the world works.
For a while all I did was eat chicken and after about 427 weeks of that my girlfriend and roommate asked for something other than chicken. So we got turkey.

Congrats man. I am in the same boat as you. Sure I didn't lose 180 lbs. I wouldn't have had much left of me. I did lose 50 the first go around. 180 lbs is f**king amazing.

the biggest rule I live by in life...is Keep True Friends... Ditch the people that bring you down.
you'd be amazed how much this changes your life.
P.s. Not saying to Ditch your family... but just stay away from people that dont steer you in the right direction.

Good advice. That must be where everyone has gone in my life. I guess it is a natural thing to do.

Hang in there. It can be really hard to keep a healthy way of living when you're around people who don't understand. Hopefully someday they'll come to you to look for advice to improve their way of living. Keep up the good work.

Keep at your lifestyle, they will regret bringing you down for it in the long run, when they see the benefits.

I totally support you man because I've been there and done that myself! I had to ditch A LOT of friends because they just dont 'get it'. But the fact is, I don't give a damn if they dont look it. Nothing is more important than your body!!
In fact, I took it further, I had some family conflicts because of my healthy diet! I had to ignore them for about a month and made a solid statement that I AM RIGHT!!! They finally gave in and let me do it.
So, ignore everybody that disagree with you because they are just fools and you know it.

I think everyone who has ever changed their lifestyle and gotten seriously into fitness has had this with their friends.
It's not that they're not your "true friends", it's just guys giving each other ****.
I mean look at it from their perspective: working out and eating obsessively cleanly, measuring out portions of food, counting calories, etc. is pretty "unmanly", and seen as a sort of "girly" thing to do to most people...it'd be like if one of your friends started tanning, getting manicures, and getting $80 haircuts. And cmon, everyone here would rib their friends about stuff like that a little. It's just that your eating habits are more noticeable than all that other stuff because you do it 6-8 times a day and eating is a part of a lot of social situations.
Don't hate your friends because of it. Or wait till you're noticeably jacked. that usually makes it stop

I love it when my overweight friends tell me that my eating habits are strange. I always ask, "So eating healthy is considered strange these days?" Haven't got a good response to that question yet
Pretty sure most of us here know what you're going through. No denying that one of the hardest parts of eating healthy is dealing with the other people in your life, because most people don't care about health/nutrition.

when a overweight person or even a friend make any negative comments on my diet, I just laugh and they soon find to be a shame and shut up.
As for the normal weight person comment on my diet, I really try to completely ignore them and continue with my diet. What's the point of argueing with them? It just leads to an endless debate.

65% of all Americans are considered "overweight" with half of those people being obese.
obesity in children is at an all time high.
if we keep up with the current growth trends, 100% of American children will be obese by 2044 and 100% of all Americans will be obese by 2058.
diabetes is at an all time high.
heart disease and cancer are our #1 and #2 killers, claiming the lives of well over 1 million Americans each year.
WHY WOULDN'T YOU TRY TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!?!?

^^^^I think so. It might be repetitive, but it was just what I needed to read this second. My bf is ignoring my call AND e-mail right now, because I'd confided in him I am not happy with my new measurements. Like, thanks, jerka$$. "I'd love you no matter what" is NOT supportive; it is DISCOURAGING!! Wouldn't we, everybody here, prefer to hear loved ones say, "You're working so hard, I know it will pay off", or "I'll love you regardless of how meticulously you plan your meals"??????
I understand once you reach your goals, you MIGHT be able to loosen up a little, but when you're trying to overhaul your body, putting in as much effort in every respect as you can, and people just tell you, "but you're not fat", and don't want to understand what you're doing?!?! Ahhhh!! Frustrating!! Your thread is MOST welcome!! It's not like we are telling them what to do or what to eat or giving them unsolicited advice!!

I guess this issue is very common. I´d say it´s a mix of envy and ignorance. I´m not making a hardcore transformation and I don´t want to be freakin huge or something. I just began to eat healthier since last year to add some mass and muscle and it´s very annoying that, for example, nobody can understand that eating clean more times a day (4 or 5 times) is healthier. At home I´m still blamed of eating all the food available and I´m buying most of my own supplies!!!!! And when some friends see someone who is lean and fit they say "he must be obsessed....." or "he must spend 4 hours a day in the gym, what a waste of time".
The key is to keep goals in mind and be sure that this is a healthier lifestyle than getting drunk every weekend and eating 2 burgers a day.

Respectfully, some of you folks are missing the point. The fact is that nobody else really gives a rats A$$ about what we're doing. They are either, 1. Oblivious to our goals, 2. Annoyed by the inconvenience it may cause THEM, 3. Envious, or 4. Totally indifferent.
And here's another little secret: All that's ^ okay. Perfectly okay. We sometimes want support for what WE do and that's understandable, but most people don't see what we're doing as a primary objective like....oil painting, doing auto body work, or whatever... Many see what we do as an overboard obsession (and it IS for many of us), and they see us as very self-absorbed (which many of us are right? lol). All this is OKAY, JUst don't look for comfort in others for something YOU have chosen to do that is very different from what most others can comprehend.
It's all good

I'm catching some of the same stuff myself right now which is odd considering my parents are usually health freaks. It's most difficult when they keep filling our cabinets with high carb foods, and not to mention the cake in the fridge for the last few weeks. Makes it VERY difficult for my self control.
Even my friends are asking me why I'm buying exercise equipment, they'd rather see me buy an xbox 360 with my money. No one believes that I really am making an effort to improve my life style and health. It's just something you have to learn to deal with I guess.
Keep in mind that what you're doing is for yourself, NOT for them. And that in the long run you will benefit the most. Use this to keep your head up and stay motivated.

maybe for you, this is all about yourself...but it isn't for me.
i want to be healthy for my friends and family...everyone i love. i want to be able to play with my kids (assuming i have some one day), watch them grow up and have their own families...and be there for my grandchildren, and great grandchildren; God willing.
maybe if more people looked at living a healthy lifestyle as benefitting their loved ones as much as themselves as individuals...they wouldn't let themselves become lazy, unhealthy, obese couch potatoes

Come on, no grand standing here LOL. I want world peace and to find a cure for cancer. Gimme a break. Sure, my family will benefit from my being around longer and that's great. Really, it is. And I think about that as I become healthier. But if you're BBing and not JUST "eating healthy" and "exercising".........you might need to stand back and reassess who you're actually doing this for. Besides, there's nothing wrong with being selfish when it comes to personal health and fitness. The people around me may benefit from my diligence regarding my health, but that's a secondary benefit to me. Albeit, an excellent benefit, but it's not my primary reason for doing it. You have to love yourself first before you can be of more value to others

to each his own
my choice to delve into the competitive aspect of bodybuilding has nothing to do with my family, but my choice to live a healthy lifestyle is a conscious decision that i make for myself as well as for those around me.
edit: at any rate, if he tries to get his family to accept what he does...pointing out the deteriorating health of our nation as well as the desire to build a stronger family are probably better reasons than "I want to be the next Mr. Olympia," or "teh girlz like dem abz y'heard"

LOL, read your first post and then read this one ^. They are almost opposite. "Nothing to do with my family" & "Conscious decision that i make for myself as well as for those around me" (family mentioned 2nd) kinda jump out at me.
Anyway, seriously....not trying to stir things up. I just tend to believe the wording in the last post you made is a little closer to actuality. It's all good. It's all good.

my participation in a competitive endeavor benefits my family in no way.
i make a choice for myself that affects my family...but i see what you're trying to say.
you're just lucky I didn't start talking about how I live a healthy lifestyle for God.
edit: also notice that my previous post was a response to someone who said that we don't do this for anyone other than ourselves. obviously a part of this is for ourselves...but it's not purely done for oneself on all occassions.
