Cauliflower ears
Anyone know how to prevent or slow down cauliflower ears aside from wearing head gear?

That is the only way, just learn to embrace it, consider it a rebirth.

put vaseline on them maybe?
Just tape them rather than wear a full scrum cap, or just tape one if you are a flanker/loosehead a la Lewis Moody and Andy Sheridan

Put an ice pack on them to reduce the swelling. Unfortunately when you bash your ears, small blood vessels brake causing the ear to fill up with blood.
So I should imagine wearing protective gear, & icing them will help. A friend of the family has actually gone deaf, the doctors put it down to his rugby days bashing his ears.

I was watching an episode of UFC a couple of weeks ago and one of the guys was letting another one draw bloody looking fluid out of his ear with a big needle. Never seen it done before but it makes sense because the problem is caused by the build up of fluid in the tissue.
You might check on that method.

I have them on both ears. Luckily, I got them drained in time so there's not much disfiguration. I advise my students that if they feel their ears are very sensitive(red, hurst when you just touch them) its a sign that they'll puff up. Get ear guards( I wear then when my ears hurt), because I learned the hard way. You can ice them too. If they puff up, get them drained by a doc who knows what they're doing. If you let it go, it'll dry up, and end up looking like a walnet!Getting it drained won't return it to normal, but lessen its damage. And yes, you can loose some hearing from it!

just wear the friggin headgear. getting the blood build up sucks because it hurts and looks disfigured. i had to get my ear drained by a throat and ear surgeon. even though cauliflower ear is a symbol of pride, it's not worth it.

I had cauliflower ear and that **** was drained. Sucked cause I got it drained 2 days before a tourny and I hate wearing headgear. But if you wanna prevent it warm up your ears atleast before you practice.

Never heard the swelling/bloodvessel-reason for cauliflower ears. I always thought it was caused by all the cartilage getting mashed up.

all the swelling of blood in the ear leads up the to cauliflower ear. it gets deformed and then you can't fix it back. the cartilage does get mashed up, and in the process, the blood vessels break or something and lets in lots of blood. eventually, the blood in the ear hardens if you don't get it drained right away. that's how the ear becomes deformed. you're choice if you want cauliflower ear or not.

There are small fibers that hold the skin to the cartiledge. When the skin is pulled away from the cartiledge during contact (like tieing up in wrestling), blood and other fluids fill in the broken area. This fluid eventually hardens into scar tissue I believe. I have moderate cauliflower ear on both sides. Not much to do about it... if you are into contact sports for life, it is something that must be accepted.
