I just heard this album and wow im ****in surprised.
I was expecting hip shakin songs because of Hips don't lie but the whole album is full of rock music, it's a weird album, it has lot of rock elements and the lyrics are REALLY GOOD...nothing compared to Hips don't lie.
I recommend it, there are classic songs like "How do you do?" wow **** one of the best rock songs ever (im serious)... there is a dance(techno) song with very sarcastic lyrics called Timor, she talks about this place called Timor which is forgotten while we watch MTV and people die over there...something like that...I think is one of the best songs in the album...and of course there are the romantic ballads...like Illegal with Santana...oh and Something is really...relaxing, i like it.
Good album, it has great songs.
Also after getting this surprise from Shakira I checked some spanish songs of her...she has really good rock songs I recommend the following:
Inevitable - TRY to get this one live from MTV UNPLUGGED (excellent song)
Octavo dia (if you know spanish then get this one ASAP! the lyric is amazing)
Lo imprescindible (she shows this anger in her voice...so cool)
Estoy aqui (good rock/pop song)
Escondite Ingles
Donde estan los ladrones?
and i can go on and on...good songs. The girl is talented.
Now i'll go back to reading her biography haha...im just really interested in her today.
haha I knew I would get this kind of reply, seriously only because the woman shake her hips in most of her commercial songs doesn't mean she doesn't have the talent to make a good rock song.

what songs? how do you do? is in the album....the others spanish songs are from her other spanish albums...she used to sing only spanish before singing in english...
I recommend Donde estan los ladrones? album...probably her best album to date.

Why? Because she's not death metal? or prog metal? That's the typical view of most kids these days, metal is the measuring stick by which music is judged. There's different kinds of music you know, and Shakira is damn good at what she does

LOL, ****ty pop music is much more popular than metal so I dunno what you are talking about. There are alot of metalheads here as metal tends to be very popular among testosterone fueled angry young 16-24 year old men.

Yea, I said "kids"... go to any high school and ask the GUYS about their favorite songs, rock/metal will dominate the list. I don't think it's the testosterone, it's just what's popular for people trying to be "anti conformity".
No problem with that, but there's other types of music... simple music, with no crazy solos, that is just as good.

I don't mind simple music, opeth "damnation" is a great piece of minimalistic rock. The problem with most pop music (this is a generalization, I have not heard this specific shakira album) is that it is very repetitive, soulless, generic, shallow, uncreative and unartistic in every way. It's not about technical proficiency, that's only icing on the cake and is hardly necessary to make good music.

Was that directed at me? If so, I don't listen to metal really.
And what do you mean damn good at what she does? Variable vocal range? The amazing music she makes and sings over? She's OKAY at what she does, and it all comes down to personal prefence whether you want to listen to a mediocre singer. If you like her that's fine and dandy, she's not awful, but I don't like her because she constantly sounds like she's underwater.

I agree, pop music is very...soulless with no meaning. TRUST Me I don't like Britney Spears and the other crap with stupid lyrics kind of music.
AND thats why I posted this because she surprised me and when I posted this which was year ago it was only with her recent album, but now I bought her other albums and they are all good with good lyrics...
I never gave this girl a chance but for some reason I said to myself....hey she is for sure DIFFERENT..so lets check it out and I did...and she surprised me, she isn't only POP...she goes from rock to dance to latin rock to latin music to cumbia to even BOSSA NOVA....and the best of all is that she produces EVERY song and writes it all, so that says something...she isn't another Britney Spears.
soo..let me continue haha...so I started to like her music specially the old CDs (spanish stuff, because she only has 2 english CDs...and this recent one is the best in my opinion...the first english one is...too commercial) so i went to her concert....she blew me away, she can play like...5 instruments and the girl is smart....anyway on stage she rocks and i'm serious...its only her with her band so don't expect some dancers and stuff like that...its not a show, its a real concert.

Also, Shakira sucks in English. I don't know what it is, but I can not stand her singing in English. In Spanish I really like her, though.
Dia de Enero is on Fijacion Oral 1, it's about her Argentine boyfriend. It's a good song. Very not Shakira at all.
Also Octavo Dia is a good song too, but it's from way back in the day.
yeah in english she is different atleast I though until I heard Oral Fixation english version...it has good songs. BUT I can't stand the hip shaking song...I mean hips don't lie...its her worst **** ever...it was obviously done to sell some CDs.
Also...about Dia de enero not being Shakira....seriously where would you put Shakira? she can't be categorized.... she always makes different music, she keeps growing up. What i like about that song is her voice, even if you don't understand you can feel her happiness...thats another thing I like she is a great interpreter, listen to Lo Imprescindible...you can feel her anger, or No you can feel her sadness.
I don't like her singing. It sounds like she makes choices at random with her falsetto, dynamics and tone. It's really ****ing irritating and doesn't make for a convincing vocal imo.
