The secret is out...Victoria is a biotch.
I posted this on my "myspace" blog, but I thought some of you ladies might appreciate/understand this story...
I recently stopped into the Victoria's Secret store in the Mall of America with a coupon for a free panty. Normally I do not shop there because I think their ad campaign sends a poor body image message to young women (and men for that matter.) Yah, I'm one of those. But hey, its a free panty, so why not?
When I walked in I was greeted nicely by a salesgirl who hounded me about the best bra in the whole universe. (I'm sure its great, but I currently am not in need of bras. Skittles don't need much support you know? ) I made my way toward the panty section, and was stopped by another salesgirl who directed my attention to the new fitness inspired line of clothes and undergarments. I was then SHOCKED to find out this new fact about myself: I am NOT sexy in the gym. After blatantly looking at my chest, the salesgirl led me to a very padded "sports" bra, and informed me that I need the pads so I can feel and look sexy when I'm working out. These were here words, and I am not exaggerating. I may have imagined it, but I think she even winked at me, like it was some kind of "inside" thing that we both knew...my small boobs are hideous.
So if you see me in the gym, please shield your eyes. I don't want to be responsible for making anyone throw up their pre-workout protein shake.
PS Happy Memorial Day!

Ewkk...that's so obnoxious. I feel about Vicky Secret's as you do--I just LOVE how nearly all their 32As (available in only select styles) are fiercely PADDED! That's what I love about this forum--we're subversive bodies, many of us, carving out our own version of "sexy"!

i love vs, great bikinis and i'm a total lingerie addict and i've probably spent a couple of thousand dollars there without even having one in the province i live in.. but that is SICK. the sports bras are fine, i prefer to workout with a shirt on, but they're cute looking.
i guess you can't blame her, maybe most of the girls that go in there are also the girls that go extremely slowly on the elliptical and talk about all the guys in the gym with their friends, come in with full face makeup and never break a sweat
i have a feeling that MY skittles being slightly pushed up and uncomfortably padded isn't going to make up for the sweat all over my face, red cheeks, frustrated look on my face (does that happen to anyone else? lol), messily pulled back hair and desperate gasping for air

don't get me wrong, i think the VS models are absolutely beautiful and sexy. the thing that bugs me kinda is that they ask "what is sexy" and they show the models with the exact same body type and chest and same look. not to mention the mannequins in their stores. so is thats what sexy is? well i guess the rest of us are just SOL! i just think it sends the wrong message...sexy is many shapes and sizes and body types--not just the lucky supermodels with amazing genetics, not just toned fitness girls, not just bodybuilders, etc.

I actually do wear padded bras because they sit nicely under my business shirts, but a padded sports bra is just insane! I like to squish my measly boobs down as much as possible!
I was looking at their website the other day and had to laugh when I saw the size A bra catergory was modelled by models with C cups at least! I thought that was amusing!

the best part is that most of those models ARE very small chested (from what i've seen from fashion magazines and other shoots, etc. ) and vs must pad and push up even more for those pictures

Yeah i'm feelin ya sisters. I like there bras and such but the people they find to work in there think its OK to inspect your body and tell you what they think a problem for you is. Like were not our own worst critique. They just want to break you down so they can make a commission.

I HATE THE "P" WORD! IT NEEDS TO BE BANNED!
P.S. Who cares about looking sexy in the gym? I have "skittles" too, lol . . . There's no one near the squat rack that I'm trying to impress. I go there with ratty hair pulled up under a hat, no makeup & my husband's army sweats (you know the ones that say in big bold letters A R M Y on them) . . . but it's 4am when I go and my husband is deployed. I suppose when he comes home I might try to be more presentable

justagirl: you're Canadian?!?! Yay!!
imperfectlylou, I totally agree....
I dislike VS models because I agree that they are tanned anorexics. Gisele is hot, yeah, but the lot of them....they look sick. Like I should be donating to their food fund, and not kids in Africa. I hate that men flip through pictures of airbrushed anorexics with chicken breasts in their bras and think that's what women should look like. I"m not kidding about the chicken breasts. Those women are flat, flat, flat, and not that there's anything wrong with that (I aspire to be more flat, myself), but it IS wrong for them to them hike those puppies up there and pretend it's natural.

their clothing does fit really well though.. pretty much the only t-shirts I can find to fit me (their website is great too, and they always email the sales.. I never buy anything full price from anyone) AND their clothing can be put in the dryer.

I go to the gym to workout hard and make progress toward my goals, not meet people. But IF I ever was interested in meeting a woman at a gym, I would be more impressed with a girl that could put up some serious weight than one that looked fixed up. That sales girl is an idiot! Unfortunately, the product must be selling or the company would not have it. I am not intending to insult anyone that buys such products; instead, my point is that guys who are impressed with crap like that are not worth impressing.
Padded "sports" bra = lame
Being strong enough that I know you can spot me with no problem = awesome.
Being strong and having knowledge to help me be more productive in the gym = very awesome!
That sales girl will end up with a shallow guy if a sports bra is what impressed him or worse if that is what she thinks is important.

And while we're on the subject, can I go on a rant about the lack of sports bras for those who need them most. I take 36DD, and finding a decent sports bra is rarer than hen's teeth. When I asked why it's so hard to find good supportive bras in big sizes, I was treated to a blank stare and assured "Women that size don't do sports." Grrr...

I agree with your What is Sexy? critique....it is wrong and so many advertisers don't get it.
Nike has a great ad campain and one of the most successfull in it's history (featuring real/athlectic women body part such as a close up of a woman's rear who runs and it says I love my buns there my furnace (can't remember exactly) but still most marketing experts predicted it would be a failure.
Dove has another ad campaign on "Real Beauty" that is extrememely successfull
All these campaigns prove is that we as women don't need to see a fashion perfect model inorder to find the clothing or product appealing. I am all for a more real society.
Unfortunately, for Spytechs_wife that sales lady is easily influenced and seems to be socialized by fashion magazines. If you can maybe "pity" her as she not only tries to encourage other women to live up to this photoshoped glamourized ideal of what a woman is - Which only sets her up for failure and unfortunately she herself probably feels inadequate everyday and it will only get worse as she gets older.
It is much better to see "real beauty" in real women and in what these women do (like Nike and JoeyTS).

I wonder if this sales lady is so used to people coming in who feel they need to be "fixed" in some aspect that it's now the standard in her mind. Rather sad. I understand playing up your positives, but it seems she just expected you to be unhappy with part of yourself.
My two cents: a woman who dresses up in padded sports bras and makeup to attract men (or women) at the gym seems a little deceptive to me. I love it when the girl I'm seeing is a gym rat, but not if she's going just to scope out the muscleheads
I dated a female once who was a boxer, could actually hurt me in a wrestling match. I couldn't date an "anorexic" female after that.

the last thing i need really: is looking "Sexy- in-this- manner '" in the gym..
i really find girls who are jogging on the treadmill with half their boobs sticking out and madly bouncing up and down plain weird- not sexy ,at all.
but then, i am only a gril who joggs in her baggy sleeping shirt

That's why I love the dove commericals that are on tv....they show differnet ages, body shapes, features....they are great!
1st of all those VS sales people are annoying as sh!t....I hate even looking in the store of fear they might attack me!! They seriously all come at you and don't stop- I thought about once screaming 'if you want me to buy something leave me the hell alone!' haahaa Anyways, that girl was really rude. She has no idea if you love or hate your boobs. Who's to say big boobs are better than smaller ones!? I just think peoples body images are so screwed up anymore. And a padded sports bra....that's just ridiculous!

I'm a man and I can tell you that those girls don't have amazing genetics. It doesn't take much to be lanky and skinny. Makeup and plastic surgery can do alot for a girl.

I agree wholeheartedly. The funny thing is that whenever I've been in there the girls who work there are nothing like the models. Short, chubby, but with heavy makeup.

I seriously dont know whether to laugh or cry at this persons response to your questions!!!! I am a 34D- and although I purchase much of VS clothing-I LOVE the quality and the styles I have to admit (their jeans are the only ones I can find long enough for me and fit me well) I NEVER go into the stores for fear of the clingy- tiny- clueless salesgirls whom I might be forced to crush with one hand if they suggest I look sexy at the gym...

I've never worn the stuff myself but Victoria's Secret clothing falls apart pretty easy and is kind of over priced.
I like Fredericks, just not on me haha

I find it interesting that someone can campaign for body acceptance and the fact there there are all different kinds of beauty, yet turn around and attack and insult naturally slender women in the next breath.
From my experience, I'd say it's pretty obvious VS tends to hire a certain type of woman who often comes across as pushy, bitchy and/or snobby. I don't particularly care to shop their stores for that reason, but I do shop their catalogs and Web site. I love their lingerie and their body conscious clothes.
I do wear sports bras, baby Ts and fitted shorts or yoga pants to the gym. I like to check my form, see my progress and feel sexy in a powerful way. That's my choice and I see nothing wrong with it... just as there's nothing wrong with wearing loose shirts and sweatpants... it's whatever feels comfortable for you.

totally agree with DA... i LOVE getting stuff for my little lady at VS.
however, i've ONLY been to one of there stores once! i frankly cant
imagine shopping there instead of at their online website ever again.
Not only is it convenient, but there are FAR MORE ITEMS at the online
website than you'll EVER see at any of their small shops, in many more
colors and EVERY size imaginable. NOT to mention, the ability to have
the stuff gift wrapped and shipped anywhere in the world for a small
fee. plus, if you sign up for their email ad lists, every few weeks you
learn about specials and sales that are NOT available in their actual
stores.
and, of course, NO BIITCHY salespeople to deal with
best,
~lifer
