Mom signed me up for a new gym...
Mom comes home from work and tells me she just signed me up for this new 'super gym' thats about to open, and that i will eventually have to quit my old gym. I guess it has the following:
-Smoothie Bar
-Steam Room
_Freeweights/Cardio Machines
-Tanning rooms, spas, steam rooms, hottubs, massage rooms, etc
-Various classes
-1 Complimentary Training Session
I have a huge feeling that I'm gonna wind up going there ot see cardio-obsessed workers who whine about every step they run on a treadmill, teenage 'lifters' who have no effing clue of what they're doing, snooty trainers, peopel who spend all their time (or most of it) in the steam room/hottub/bar, and big shots far as the eye can see...
I like my current gym though. It mgiht be a bit 'old', but it has all the right weights, good people/trainers, and not all the crap that would make it the same as the fad gyms. I go to a gym to lift for an hour, take a quick shower, and head home. I don't go to get smoothies, spend an hour in the sauna, and *make* 20 minutes for lifting. A gym should emphasize training, not pure comfort, IMO.
I'm just a bit angry because i was never told that I was gonna be signed up for this new gym, and it was known well that I felt sickly about fad gyms such as that.
If I go to do military presses and notice some kid is spending mmore than 30 minutes on the bench bench pressing, I will explode.
...sorry had to vent. What do you guys think?

My only advice is to go to the gym, do your own thing, focus on you and get out.

I guess my mom's main reasoning is that she wants to switch gyms because 'in the current one,t here is no air conditioning'. Hell, when you workout, you're SUPPOSED to sweat, anyways. How are you gonna know (in some sense) when enough is enough?

Doesn't sound too bad to me. From what it sounds like you'll OWN the place. Better than my gym where there is a broken set of dumbells at least once a day and its ALWAYS the exact one i need. Stupid macho guys lifting too much and dropping them on the floor every set. Neway just enjoy it. Oh and the smoothies do sound pretty good.

All of my friends changed their memberships to this new Lifetime fitness in town. They're still weak as hell and I dont need a ****ing salon, hot tub, and restaurant for a $70 a month membership. I dont think people understand the idea of going to a gym to exercise anymore.

i dont know where the hell you live but,
at my gym, they had no air conditioning at ALL last year, no air whatsoever, other than early morning, it was hot and steamy in there, and the fact that all the steam from the changerooms came out to the gym wasnt helping..... i sweat when i walk in to that kind of atmosphere, anyways, ask your mom for some free smoothies, its a tasty protein shake, why not have a tasty treat, just dont overdo it.

Wow, I've never even heard of a $70 per month membership... my gym is $40 per month, is air conditioned and has brand new equipment, is kept spotless and is open 24/7... and you can also buy all your supplements, sports drinks, fitness logs etc there... I thank god for the place.

Just be glad she is paying for it now, becuase when you turn 18 she will probebly sudgust that you pay. Suck it up and just lift.
My mom bought me a pair of those workout gloves and I didn't even ask her to. I didn't need them, but I was thankful.

Sounds good, we don't have anywhere near as good as that. I go to some old gym that is awesome, it has everything you need and it's near my house and no ones bent over looking good in a gym.

the place i go in summer's a bit like that.
no teens though; mainly fat middle aged men and cardio-obsessed women. there's only one guy who's actually ripped - he's amazing.
and air conditioning is a great thing to have in a gym. yes, you're supposed to sweat, but being in a room full of sweaty weightlifters on a hot day in July is not nice. coming out of the baking summer's heat into a cool, well ventilated gym is nice; i can't workout well when i'm in a hot room, and the freshness of an air-conditioned health club helps me become more motivated.
i love the place i go to though. it's a lot different to my school gym, which is bare, dark and basic - a proper, traditional gym. i like the school gym, but i prefer the health centre. i spend about 45 minutes working out, followed by a 421 metre swim, 10 minutes in the sauna and 20 in the spa pool.
sure, the environment in these places is a lot less strict, focused and motivated, and you do get people who don't seem to know what the hell they're doing. but if you really focus on your workout, you can learn to ignore what's going on around you and get on with what you need to do.

What's wrong with Cardio obsessed workers? A Marathoner is much more fit then alot of muscle heads you see in a gym...remember, cardio is the building block to a complete fitness program.
Teenage lifters who have no clue? Remember, you aren't the only one who's knows something about weight lifting. If you do see teenagers who don't know what they are doing, go give them some advice...be a friend, not a stuck-up SOB.
Snooty trainers? Possibly, but alot of people in life are snooty (you are exhibiting a 'snooty attitude')
As far as people being in the steam room/hot tub/bar, who cares? That is their thing, and if they aren't bothering anyone, then what's the harm?
Big shots? Again, you seem to think you are a big shot, the way you are stereo-typing these 'fad' gyms (which you haven't even been in yet). I work out at home, but I also belong to a Golds Gym when I vacation at our second home. Alot of the guys who go to Golds are pretty big, especially the guys you see either late at night or early in the morning. There are even powerlifters who go to Golds, one guy was benching 450lbs RAW for 5 reps (unbelieveable to me, I have never seen anything like that).
I am not trying to be rude to you, but I just think that all of this name calling and whining is not showing any maturity.

....those are good point. Keep in mind i said iw as venting.
I'm giving it a chance, and i didnt mean to sound like a snoot. However, I like my current gym and I feel like its gonna be run down by another chain gym. Of course i'm a bit defensive.

you do military press on the bench press bench?... also, i spend about 15-20 mins on bench right now due to my training. it's just what the routine calls for.
do you not have a contract with the old gym? or is it a month to month thing.
