Calling all liberal arts majors! Are you as "useless" as they say?
I remember seeing a member's sig about him laughing at liberal arts majors, so... What are your majors and what are your goals in the future?
- BA, Double Major in History & English, expected 08 (in actuality 09, I'm on the five-year-plan, artsy slackers rule! )
- Then, plan to obtain BEdu (School of Education) (Canada), expected 2010
- Goal is to teach English, most likely overseas (in Hong Kong and/or China)
I've took an interest in Chinese history, and decided to do a major in it as well as English, so the plan is to teach English in Hong Kong and/or China while learning more about the history behind it, the people, etc. first hand. I'm 19 and I've just finished my sophomore year, going into my junior year now in the summer.
So, all of you liberal arts majors that these people here call "useless", what do you plan to do with your life?

Liberal arts degrees are fine if you are getting a post-grad. degree on top of it, or if you want to be a teacher.
Beyond that, yeah, the job prospects aren't looking so hot.

Science majors ask, "what is it?"
Engineering majors ask, "how does it work?"
Liberal arts majors ask, "would you like fries with that?"
I shouldn't talk though, if the liberals take over Washington, I may be the one waiting for the fries to ding.

Maybe I read the thread wrong.

I majored in poli-sci, since graduating I've worked on campaigns and for the legislature. This fall I will be starting law school.
Far from "useless"

Liberal Arts is probably the most versatile major one could select in their undergrad degree. You could go onto business school, law school, or go pre-med. Most people who major in liberal arts go to law school...at least the people I know do.
If you really want to become a teacher, that's cool. But just know that if you have a strong undergrad track record, and good scores on the LSATs or the GMATs, you could find yourself at Harvard for grad school.
