1st grader sent home for mohawk
"Administrators with school District 60 say the Mohawk is a distraction and they want him to cut it off."
" Tuesday afternoon the two sides reached a compromise. Jared can keep his Mohawk, as long as it is combed down."
http://www.koaa.com/news/view.asp?ID=4841
compromise, my ass. basically, "you can keep it...but not really."
what the f*ck. i'm so sick of principals pulling the old "we don't like your hair cut or color, so we're going to say it's distracting the kids" bullsh*t. this story is just one of many. does anyone here think schools should be able to decide what kind of a hair cut a kid can have? or body jewelry? you have to be an idiot to believe it's actually distracting. THEY know that, and I know that. what, no one's ever seen a mohawk before? or blue hair? or a septum ring?
mother: "billy, why did you fail this math test?"
billy: "well, gee, mom, i couldn't stop staring at susie's pink hair. it was b!tchin!"

Of all the junk to worry about with kids (of any age) he's worrying about a hair cut?
I'll go read the story, but from just the post, this is insane...
**edit**
After reading the story - I still agree with what I said above. I personally don't have a problem with the "compromise", although I still think it is stupid. But if I was in that situation as a parent - I'm not sure how I would react in regardes to accepting the deal or not.

Fat kids distract me because they breathe loudly. From now on, all fat kids in class have to go on a diet so I'm not distracted.

well the mohawk is a native american haircut so what the hell is this white kid doing with one? haha. Anyways i think it more of a matter of discipline rather than not liking his haircut. They probably dont want kids to feel they can do whatever the hell they want. Hey why not let him get tattoos and peirce his nose too. after all he is 6 and is practically an adult right?

There should be some kind of decipline. Otherwise, it'll send a message that kids can do whatever they want. Not good.

gee, i didn't know haircuts belonged to different groups of people. "sorry, billy, but the natives own that haircut. you'll have to get one like a cracker." why NOT let him get tats and piercings (if it were legal for a minor)? what's it hurting? you really think a kid will think he can do whatever he want if he can be creative with his hair and body? god forbid you let someone be expressive with their style. they'll run amuck! "oh gee, i don't have to study any more, or wear pants. i can yell in class and rape the other students while getting cookie crumbs all over the floor. i feel this way because they let me get a mohawk!" yeah, right. you're not thinking very hard, are you? they don't let him have this haircut purely because they dont' LIKE it. don't be so f*cking ignorant. what is wrong with you people.

While you are at it, why not get a few piercings and some big ass tattos? It's just not looked upon as a good thing (especially on kids) so it should be banned in schools. Decipline is decipline, and kids should be taught to follow it at an early age. This haircut is an example.

dude, read what i just said (maybe you just posted at the same time i did). you think things should be banned because people don't like them? what kind of sh*t is that? where's the logic? do you have anything besides "it's not looked upon as a good thing." discipline should have a point, in and of itself. you shouldn't just pick random things in order to show kids discipline. there are already plenty of rules. THESE rules, however, are only there because adults want people to look a certain way. discipline isn't helpful when it teaches kids to be sheep.

The kid I am sure looks like a moron, but isn't he just an (sarcasm)"individual" "making a statement"?(sarcasm) He should be allowed to have his hair as he wishes and look as retarded as he wants unless the school has a policy otherwise.
My suggestion, homeschool. He is probably just learning a bunch of government agenda driven nonsense anyways that will not help him any way in the future.

It's more complicated than that. When you see a bunch of 7-year olds with tattos, mohawks, and baggy pants, it doesn't show a good image. Now compare that to a groomed kid with nice and clean clothes. Which one looks more "civilized"? I know looks are deceiving sometimes, but this is just stupid.
They can do all that **** when they grow up and know what's stupid and what's not.

I say if kids can get sent home for having mohawks then they should also send the kids home who also have bleach-blonde hair, afros, pigtails. This **** makes no sense and is,for the most part,un-American.

If their peers laugh at them, they'll know it's stupid. If their peers are impressed, they'll know it's not so stupid. Even a 6 year old can figure that one out.
Right, Right I get it. Supress his freedoms now, so then when he gets older, he'll be more responsible with his freedoms....makes lots of sense.

This is dumb. What gives the principal any authority to tell a kid how to do his hair or look? Does the principal think he's the ideal human being and everyone should look like him?

His peers are kids too. If they think it's "cool", it doesn't make it "cool".
Supress his freedom? Hell ya! No one is allowed to do whatever they want. Take an example of drinking. There is an age limit for that. Adults are aware of the consequences of drinking and they can make their own descision based upon it. Kids, on the other hand, will be kids (immature).
You are probably also the kind of person who thinks it's good to spoil your kid and let him do whatever he wants. Something like you see on those "nanny" reality shows. Those kids are not taught any decipline by parents and that's why they start acting up.

I work as a juvenile probation officer. I have plenty of kids on my caseload that look like the nice clean cut kid next door. The problem is that to many people think a clean cut image translates into good behavior. This is absolute nonsense. The school was wrong on this one plain and simple.

oh, please, you sound like my retarded aunt. here we go.
let's take a real life example of me and my ex friend (we were friends at the time). i had a reverse mohawk (shaved down the middle, spike the sides), it was fire f*ckin' red and i had multiple facials piercings. my friend dressed in "nice," preppy clothes. my aunt was under the impression that he was a good kid and i should follow his example. guess what. that mother f*cker was a compulsive liar (lied about other friends to us), couldn't hold a job down for more than a week or two at a time, and when he finally did, he robbed them! in one year, he had about 3 or 4 crimes put on his record. if i had remained friends with him, he would have had less. i was always holding him back from doing stupid, mean sh*t.
i have no arrest record and i'm responsible at work. i don't lie and i am 10 times the person this guy was. you know what's stupid? judging people on their clothes. THAT'S stupid. also, you know why people continue to think that it's not "civilized" to dress a certain way? because you and other people support forcing people to dress a certain way. it only gives the illusion that "civilized" people dress a certain way.
welcome to reality, buddy. lawyers, doctors, scientists-THEY ALL HAVE TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS. you have NO idea, apparently.
a LOT of "civilized" looking people do terrible things. how many times after a cereal murder spree do you here, "well, he was always very nice and just seemed like a normal guy!"
these things only look "civilized" to you because you don't understand culture or the fact that appearance means nothing.
are you racists too? i guess since minorities commit the most crime in the US that you can't come to school black, or spanish. cuz we all know, those folks don't look civilized! it's the same damn thing.

oh ****, now you're comparing underage drinking to hair cuts? what a f*cking joke. you think just because a parent allows their child freedom of expression through their hair, they must be parent that doesn't teach their child discipline? oh man....i just can't believe the conclusions you're coming to. following that logic, people that control their child's appearance must also discipline their child well. right? obviously, that's not true. look at all the hellians that look "civilized" but aren't. allowing a child creativity says nothing about spoiling a child.

oh, hah. i have the perfect example for you, sup_builder. my girlfriend is an ISP (a "shadow". she helps problem kids) at an elementary here. she told me that the kids mother is big on appearances. she (the mother) looks all nice and normal, and so does her kid. i won't go into details, but any person with half a heart would CRY if they saw what this mother has put this child through. dressing a kid up "nice" in the morning doesn't mean a god damn thing.

Yeah, I'll be driving home late at night and I always see little kids swerving and driving erratically. Without fail, I look over and they're always driving under the influence of a mohawk.

I just feel so bad for this kid man. I cant imagine what not being allowed to wear my mohawk up at school must feel like. He'll just be forced to conform the rest of his life and probably die. Get over it damnit the kids 6 and his dumbass parents need to be slapped. Acting like the hardcore rebel isnt impressive either.
