baby coconut milk

I usually just read the post. Thanks to all for the helpful info, but when I heard this I had to ask others. I was talking to a guy at work who said a friend of his was making big gains in size by adding coconut water to his protien ( baby coconut milk). At first I paid it no mind then I heard it from a couple of guys at the heath food store I shop at. They say it has to be baby coconut milk. If any one has heard of this let me know.

I did a little bit of searching on the topic and found out the main reason it is consumed is for its Medium Chain triglycerides. These are unsaturated fats that are very easily digested in the body. Since they are broken down so quickly, they reach the liver in a very quick fashion, which in turn allows for a quick release of energy. These MCT's are also supposed to have exceptional healing properties. Coconut oil is used in baby formulas and in many cases it is used in intravenious tubes for people that must be force fed or helped to overcome serious bodily injuries. This looks like a very promising workout supplement and I think I'm going to start buying baby coconuts.

1. What is it and where does it come from?

Medium chain triglycerides are fatty acids that are more easily digested by the body than other fats. MCT oil is composed of caprylic and capric fatty acids.

Caprylic acid is often removed from MCT oil and used for cosmetic purposes. It also goes by the name octanoic acid. Capric fatty acid is often used in food flavoring, and goes by the name of decanoic acid.

Fat molecules are structured in "chains." As the name implies, Medium chain triglycerides are shorter than the long chain triglycerides. This makes them more easily digested than long chain triglycerides.

As the graphic illustrates, MCT's have between 6 and 12 carbon atoms in their structure. Long chain triglycerides have more atoms in their composition. Because they have shorter chains than long chain triglycerides, the chain triglycerides are less calorically dense. Regular fat molecules have 9 calories per gram, whereas MCT molecules have only 8.3 calories per 1 gram.

Medium chain triglycerides are available in supplemental form, but dietary sources include: coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and butter. Medium chain triglyceride oil does not have any noticeable smell, is a liquid at room temperature, and has a slight yellowish color.

2. What do they do and what scientific studies give evidence to support this?

Medium chain triglycerides are more easily digested by the body than other fat molecules. Medium chain triglycerides are also a direct energy source for the body. 1 In this sense, they mimic the function of a carbohydrate.

Consumption of medium chain triglycerides has been shown to encourage caloric thermogenesis at a rate greater than if MCT consumption had not occurred. 2, 3, 4 The body can use MCT's for a number of purposes. These include being used for muscle energy, fat burning, and for the production of adenosine triphosphate. 5

Although conflicting data has arisen regarding the efficacy of medium chain triglycerides for weight loss, anecdotal evidence continues to mount that MCT's are effective for weight loss and athletic performance.

From scanning the literature, it is clear that medium chain triglycerides are effective only under specific circumstances. Much of the literature has demonstrated that, in many cases, medium chain triglycerides have proven ineffective at eliciting weight loss, or enhancing athletic performance. 6, 7, 8

Two studies suggest that MCT's are most effective when used in conjunction with a ketogenic diet. 9, 10 This would make sense as MTC are metabolized into ketongenic molecules. MCT's are sometimes used as one of many elements in the treatment of seizures.

3. Who needs them and what are some symptoms of deficiency?

Although there are no symptoms of deficiency, everyone may benefit from supplementing with medium chain triglycerides.

Often, people will consume foods that are high in saturated fat. Simply because of this, medium chain triglyceride oil is a healthy, natural, alternative. Populations that may benefit from medium chain triglyceride supplementation include: the obese, endurance athletes11, ectomorphs and more.

Obese persons may find MCT consumption helpful toward the goal of weight loss. Fat molecules are calorically dense, and consumption of healthy fats (as a substitute for bad fats) will lead to a feeling of satiation and fullness. Consumption of good fats will allow one to reduce food cravings, feel a sense of fullness, and avoid the accumulation of body fat that is associated with the consumption of bad fats.

Because MCT's are used by the body as a direct source of energy, endurance athletes may find them to be a preferable and long-lasting energy source when undergoing physical exercise.

Hardgainers may find medium chain triglyceride supplementation to be helpful in the quest to gain mass, without the side effects associated with consuming other fat molecules (fat storage). They will effectively provide the hardgainer with the means to increase caloric intake, without adding body fat.

4. Are there any side effects? How much should be taken?

The only noted side effect of MCT consumption occurs when MCT's are taken on an empty stomach, and if in great quantities. Irritation can occur under these circumstances. 12

Research has established that MCT's are safe for human consumption. 13 Still, individual tolerance will vary. Individuals with gastrointestinal issues should avoid the use of MCT's. Diabetics should consult with a qualified medical practitioner prior to the use of MCT's. Dosage guidelines have not yet been established, so it is best to follow label directions.

This would be a great stack with x-factor coconut oil for cooking and coconut water with protein shakes.

Coconut oil is great for gaining weight. I use a tablespoon in my post workout shake. It doesn't dissolve, but kind of "shreds" into tiny chunks and with my chocoloate protein powder, it tastes like an almond joy. I'm sure coconut milk has some of the same benefits. I also use coconut oil any time I need to cook something in oil because it doesn't break down at high temperatures like olive oil.

Google virgin organic coconut oil and you'll find some good (but NOT cheap) sources for it, like tropical traditions.

Although you are correct, cocunut oil is great for gaining lean body mass, it is not optimal for post-workout consumption because you want to avoid fats post-workout. They slow nutrient uptake.

Good point... I'm kind of living in the past with my post workout shake, since it was once thought that the fast absorbing whey proteins would absorb fast, the fats would absorb at their rate, and everything would just do their own thing. Pretty much proven to not be true, though.

Maybe true, but doesn't matter; consuming healthy fats post-workout will not slow one down on making gains.

Virgin coconut oil good for health

Yes virgin coconut oil is good for health and is used by many sports/body builders. it contains MCT a natural source of energy.

MERITVCO EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL in sports/body builders to boost energy and endurance

Due to their ability to produce quick energy and stimulate metabolism, athletes have been using MCT oils to enhance exercise and athletic performance. It is very well known that during a high intensity or long duration exercise, glycogen from the muscles is used by the body as a source of energy. This leads to a depletion of glycogen which is body?s emergency source of energy. Sustained availability of energy over long period is the main factor behind increased endurance.

A study done on cyclists found that ingestion of MCT before exercise spared their muscle glycogen during high-intensity exercise (6). Since MCT oils provide a source of energy, they help the body in conserving glycogen stores for later use, thus helping to increase the endurance of athletes. For this reason, MCFA are added to many sports drinks and energy food bars in the form of MCT oil.

For most people, adding coconut oil to their daily diet helps in improving energy and endurance levels over time. Consuming coconut oil single time before a competition will not produce any significant effect. Many people have personally told me the performance and endurance enhancing effect of coconut oil on them. Massaging with coconut oil, however, seems to produce an immediate positive effect. On many occasions, my sister has told me that whenever she massaged her two sons with coconut oil, they were more active, energetic and played for long hours.
