O/T: Mercury in sushi poses danger
USA Today
Eating sushi " has become the new Russian roulette " in terms of safety, a group campaighning against mercury in fish. Eli Saddler of gotmercury.org, a campaign of California-based Sea Turtle Restoration Project, said he went to six top sushi restaurants in Los Angeles to test mercury levels in the fish they serve. " The level of mercury in tuna these resteraunts serve is so high they should be keeping this food off their list, " Saddler said. Mercury has been found to damage the nervous system in fetuses and may cause temporary memory loss in adults.

We have mad cow disease, bird flu disease and now fish is bad. We are running out of protein sources.

This aint news.
Any large fish / old fish tend to build up mercury levels quickly and yes its on the increase.
But you would have to eat a veritable ****load to cause any real harm
I think you should be more worried about - Soy/Obesity/Hormones in food/global warming in no particular order. Oh yeah, and that petrol car you drive.
no offense intended, but i think this is just a ****n beatup.

High dose soy in men is still (afaik) unproved to be "safe" for lack of a better word.
Chances of getting lots of soy in the diet are alot higher than mercury poisoning from fish. Thats my rationale, happy to hear a better argument however.

soy will most likely not affect you in the slightest.
if you are going to eat large quantities of something, soy is much safer than raw fish.
the estrogen issue in men was been debunked many times.

But raw fish tastes so much better.
I really wouldn't worry about it too much unless you're pregnant or nursing.
Think about cultures that fish is the major component of their diet. Do you see some huge epidemic of mercury poisoning?
You're better of worrying about wether or not you'll make it home from work, driving on the US highways.

opt for wild fish/meat when available. in general, they are far healthier than the farm raised, commercially available versions.

somewhere between 60-80% of the Japanese population (it's either 60% or 80%, I don't recall...but either way it's VERY high) are cigarette smokers as well. yet, they have lower rates of lung cancer than we do.
things don't always boil down to what we as Americans expect.

I try and eat Mahi - 4-5x a week. Anyone here buy/ eat Costco's Orca Bay Frozen - Wild Mahi Mahi. It says " Product of Taiwan " packed in the US. If one is eating fish 4-5xx a week. Is there any need to take fish/salmon sups or likes ? tia

This is hype. The mercury levels aren't high enough to damage you unless you're eating fish for every meal, and even then, if you drink enough water you should be fine.

Whilst Author L. Rea is not an authority, some of his points may have some validity on this matter (soy).
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/core_march_9.htm
And the following on soy feed in animals
" Pigs have a digestive system similar to humans. Dietary mixtures for pigs—which are carefully formulated to promote reproduction and growth—allow approximately 1 percent of the ration as soy in a diet based on grains and supplements.4 The Central Soya Company, Inc. website gives a range of 2.5 percent to 17.5 percent soy in the diet of pigs, citing a number of anti-nutritional components that “have been documented to cause gastrointestinal disturbance, intestinal damage, increased disease susceptibility and reduced performance in pigs.”
In recent studies, rats fed the isoflavone genistein exhibited pathological changes in the colon23 and rats fed soy-based chow had reduced growth and an increase in gastrointestinal problems.40"
I just think the jury is out on whether Soy is good for bb'ers or not. I would prefer to not have it in my diet while everyone seems to have a wildy different view on it.
