Question Calling all anatomy buffs

Where else should I ask this, the misc? It's dangerous there

... here is my question. Does anybody here have a diagram thats shows the precise locations of the nerve crossovers where the left body meets the right brain, and the right body meets the left brain? It is written all over the place 'the left brain controles the right body, and the right brain controles the left side of the body'... But I have never seen a good diagram that shows any nerve crossovers that would support this. WHERE ARE THE CROSSOVERS? Any info might help.

And yes, it is exercise related. Is has to do with good form .

I know the corpus callosum connects the two hemispheres and is responsible for communication between the two.

I had the idea that the different sides of the brain have different functions (IE the brain is not symmetrical). Don't know, I haven't realy read a whole lot on brains, I'm more concerned with the oposite end of the nerves

I also know that the corpus callosum is 40% larger in women(which explains why they mix emotions into everything)

The motor and sensory nerve tracts that run from the brain...down the sppinal cord cross at the level of the brainstem (medulla?), below the brainstem I think muscular control is ipsilateral.

So....a lesion (tumour or damage) on one side of the brainstem will affect cranial nerve functions on the same side....but motor and sensory functions on the opposite side....

It's been a while since my anatomy classes....I'll dig up some notes.

building on what this guy said.
yeah these are called ascending and descending tracts.
the acsending tracts send information to the brain ( sensory nertves) and the decsending tacts send info to muscles.
however, its not as simple as that.
there are many ascending and decsending tracts. each type of nerve has its own special tract.
eg pain nerves have the spinothalamic tract wereas proprioception has the dorsal columns
if you want an example of a descending tract you can pick say the lateral cortico spinal tract which is used for fine touch or skilled voluntary movements.

and sad to say, it gets even worse.
these tracts can cross over to the other side at the spinal level ( the dorsal colums cross over/decussate at the pyramids ) or they can cross over at the thalamus ( just before the corpus callosum) - like the tracts for the cerebellum ( intresting about the cerebellum, it crosses over at the thalamus but then crosses over again at the cerebellum, so it controls the same side of the body) - i know its a mind job
even when they reach this level, different parts of the brain control different aspects of movement. eg the motor cortex initiates movement. ( you think about moving) you cerebellum, the wrinkly thing in the back of the brain controlls "auto poilot" movements like walking down the stairs.

you can read a book that i had to learn about 3 years ago
"an illustrated colour text of neuroanatomy"
ill get a link soon...

A good book that helped me get a better understanding of neuroanatomy was called clinical neuroanatomy made rediculously simple by Stephen Goldberg.

Just got back from work, and thanks for the help guys.

To start with,

Thanks for giving me some information that I can use to decide where start, and terms to google.

bxa121, can you explain WHY 'I don't want to read that book', cause it sounds pretty interesting to me. I bet it's still better than reading an old version of Gray's! Sorry, I know you said 'believe me', but my curiosity is getting the best of me on this one.

There are some good wall charts I've seen over the years that show the cranial cavity. Your best bet is to try the medical section of a university bookstore. Or buy an Anatomy & Physiology textbook for cheap on amazon or ebay.

I don't know, I have an older edition of Gray's (which I find unreadable). I also have A.D.A.M Interactive Anatomy V.4 (student edition for pc)(pretty good), +Explore Human Anatomy (pc) and a lot of googled pictures. I have some pretty neat pics like these (see image uploaded) and many others... but still the crossover thing remains a mystery. I do, at least have more technical terms to google because of this thread.

It's an old Grays from 15-20 years ago, and the way most scientific liturature is spoken/written is a different language than I speak, grays happens to be one of the more difficult ones for me. I'd have better luck with the I-Ching most likely.

true, but i believe there is also a part of the female brain which is possibly from another dimension, that is responsible for the questions like 'do i look fat in this'. to date, they apparrently cant find where this is connected to the body, or how to go about combating the weird and mysterious powers it yields. personally, i just tell them 'yes honey, you do look fat in that'. that'll stop em asking again, although no sex for me that nite..

I can see that yo know a bit of the CNS aswellas the autonomic nervous system, but is this what you want?
i thought you wanted internal tracts and pathways etc, rather than system wide components.

Well, I'm looking to know the whole thing pretty well eventually. Internal tracts and pathways is what I am searching for right now, yes.
