Pencak Silat is the name given to the indigenous martial arts of Indonesia. There are hundreds of styles from the groundfighting Harimau system of Sumatra to the Hindu styles of Bali. Sera or Serak, named after its founder, is from the Western part of the island of Java. It is a comprehensive system emphasizing infighting, sophisticated footwork and deception. It has much in common with other West Javanese silat systems such as Cimande.

Uhm, Kali is a filipino martial art, and not a part of the indonesian style pencak silat.

I have trained in Kali and its pretty cool, can be nasty if you really get into it. Pencak is different, but also very deadly. The main difference b/w the two that I noticed is that Kali is more straight forward basic movements, Pencak takes a while to learn the fluidity(sp) of the movements, also Pencak you need to be more flexible to accomplish certain moves.
This is what I got from It, some people may disagree.

i do a little silat and such in my school, i really can't tell you what systems exactly, as it is a inosanto school, so they just do lots of stuff together. my instructor tells me less than 10 % of the material is really "martial", the rest is "art". in fact he tells me, in ten years of sparring he was only able to apply a puter kepala once.
if you want maximum effectiveness look somewhere else

Silat is more of an art form then straight out agressive fighting like jiu jitsu or boxing.

silat can teach you a good mind set though, like hitting the balls and the eyes and things like that, but like i said lot of it is flowery artistic stuff

Pencak Silat through my eyes....
Pencak Silat is a very combative art and as stated earlier has alot of flowery moves that tend to turn people off that are looking for combative upfront systems.
Silat has a spirtual/mental side,as well as a cultural dance side, in addition to the self defense aspects.
Many see the dance like aspects and off the wall moves and tend to look else where for there training.
Is it good for self defense...most martial arts are...if you study them and do not
just take a look.
It will take sometime time to flow with the techniques as I have been training for over 3 1/2 years and just have begun to feel comfortable.
Combative yes...but has more to offer then only this.
I studied karate and JKD...when I got bored...I found silat and have been happy ever since.
I think Muay Thai may help you get in fighting shape faster and learn a few self defenses..but after while you may feel it is basic in nature..atleast I do.
Or, it may be all you will ever need or wanted.
My advice is to try an art out..and really try it..by this I mean atleast 6 months in any given art.
I have found the 6 month period to be that of what will tell if the art has what you want to stick around.
