Winter Itch (dry skin)
Finally found something that works. Every winter since I turned 50 I get so freaking dry around my upper ankles and waist line it drives me nutts and even awakens me at night. Cortisone creams work but one can not go there too often as they thin your skin. I tried every thing the health food store had cream/lotion wise. My pharmacist pointed me towards a few of his elixors. Nothing. I upped my fish oil, flax and Oil of Evening Primrose...nope, nada. I soaked in Momma Snakes oatmeal bath...yawn. I took home Aloe Vera (the real plant) from my works little garden....rubbed that gooey stuff on. No such luck. Liquid Vit E.....no. I was ready for an exercism or hypnosis. Then I was so desperite two days ago I rubbed on olive oil....magnifico...voila...prego prego. I vacationed this summer in Italy, Israel and Greece....home of the olive. Chit...I may move there and buy a villa with a pool and fill it with extra virgin, olive oil that is.

This is probably how mud, pudding, and Crisco wrestling started... The quest for healthy skin, right?

That's good information, since I have almost the same problems. If I were greased up with Olive Oil how many people would be smelling me and thinking of an Italian pasta or salad.
I've used that Vaseline Intensive care lotion and it works, especially if you rub it in very well. It also doesn't stain my clothes or bed linens.
I've also heard a "big Culligan" water softner helps to prevent dry skin in So. Cal.
"Big Culligan" would be one of of those things that holds about 4 bags of salt that stands about 60"tall x 18" diameter.

I've got a huge water system conditioner and filtration set up. As far as that olive oil smell....try a few croutons in your pockets.

I get bloody noses a lot in the winter from the dry air... I thought abuot getting a humidifier, but I figure it ruins a lot of stuff in your house by pumping in all that moisture.

I'm guilty of chugging Almonds all day as it is
Look at it from the light side...
I remember I used to get the itches around my waist when I was putting on weight. I should be grateful for dry skin, eh. LOL

Some saline nasal spray works wonders for me on that front.

NOT SO!.... If your furnace is running because it is cold outside, you have a very low reletive humidity level in your house. Lower than outside. Usually, you can not add enough humidity (with a normal home humidifier) to cause any moisture problems, unless you live in a cave.
Just a little bit of added humidity goes a long way to helping with sinus, nose bleeds, dry skin, etc.
Dan
edited to add: A cheap solution for nose bleeds is cold mist humidifier running in the bedroom when you sleep. Now in that case, you need to be careful about the mist causing a moisture problem in a room. It can make things wet if you run it too high...

My wife and girls are also suffer from dry skin in the winter--I just get nose bleeds. Our humidifier makes a world of difference in our Colorado dry air.

Oh No!! Please say it isn't so.....
Shingles????
Rash turned painful and blistery yesterday and took off on me again. "If" it is shingles then no more high Arginine intake, no oatmeal, no chocolate anything and no...sniff...P-nut butter.
Started the L-Lysine and sub lingual B-12 last night. As soon as the market opens this morning...apple cider vinegar...2 tsp in water 3 times a day. Just read that 20% of all peeps 65+ get shingles and 50% of all 80 year olds. Something to look forward to boys and girls.

If its shingles go see a doctor right away. There is a drug that can stop shingles in a few days but only if is taken within 72 hours of the rash appearing.
I got shingles a few years ago and the rash (and pain) vanished in two days after I started the drug.

Doc out until 28th. Oh well...anyway 12 hours into holistic treatment for shingles...3 rounds of Lysine now, going now for 2nd apple cider vinegar water...ugga...and soy protein drink for breakfast with sub lingual B-12 and multis. Yawn...hey, may just be that I'm "certified" but they have already calmed down.

Damn, Baldie! Shingles are beyond no fun, from what I understand. At least you know what it is now, though, so you can try and get it addressed. Hope your Xmas is as comfortable as it can be.

Go find a clinic. The anti-viral drug will act fast. Without it you might be looking at months of pain.

Ouch ouch ouch. I've had shingles and so has my husband. jtroster is right -- get to a doctor or clinic asap as you need to start anti-virals within 72 hours in order for them to be effective. The good news is that they will help shorten the duration of your outbreak significantly. In the meantime, you might want to add l-cysteine to your homemad cocktail.
And you know not to take aspirin, right?
Merry Christmas - hope you get to feeling better soon
