The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
so i was watching the discovery channel earlier today, and they had a special on the bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki. although i understand that it shortened the length of the war, but in turn we killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. what are you guys thoughts?

about 200k civillians compared to several million if there would have been an invasion. everyone on japan was ready to fight the planned invasion.

It is sad that we had to do it but it also saved millions of lives. The japanese would not surrender and the only other option would have been to invade Japan, Invading japan would have resulted in millions upon millions of casualties for the Japanese and the US. I think Dropping the bombs was a great decision and sometimes even the best decision for ending a war is catastrophic. So in all we did it to end the war and prevent an invasion which would have been far worse of an outcome.

I think another factor for using the a-bomb was that the U.S did not want the soviets to help out otherwise they would have wanted a say in post war japan. Not entirely sure though

The black and white footage of the atomic detonation on history channel was out of this world!

I remember reading somewhere that Japan's leadership was ready to surrender, albeit conditionally, well before Hiroshima and Nagasaki, however both FDR and subsequently Truman wanted an unconditional Japanese surrender, which IMHO wasn't unjustifiable from the US's perspective.
Personally, although the dropping of the two bombs was atrocious and an evil act (when is incinerating hundreds of thousands of women and children not?), it was clearly the lesser of two evils.

Not dropping the A-bombs would have been signing a death sentence for hundreds of thousands of American and allied troops.

The Japanese didn't deserve an unconditional surrender. They were a rogue nation that was raping and pillaging wherever the Imperial army went.
Also, the Americans knew the Japanese were going to capitulate simply for the fact that they could no longer produce the minimal amount of supplies. However, to not be humiliated and still gain something from their aggression towards asian nations, they would be willing to hold out knowing the American people will not accept losing the lives of a million boys for an unconditional surrender. The atomic bomb solved that problem.

The A-bombs really didn't persuade the Japs to surrender. They already had 62 cities reduced to rubble and the fire bombing in some of those cities actually killed more people then the A-bombs.
An invasion would have never been needed if Truman would have let the Japs keep their emperor in the first place. It wasn't until the Russians got in on the war on Aug 8th that Truman gave in to letting them keep the emperor.
Some experts say that the war could have been over in May had Truman not been so stubborn.
