Sauna
Ok i know when you go into a sauna, you pretty much burn off water weight.
and once you start drinking fluids, you gain it back.
But can't you burn an excessive amount of calories,in the sauna.
how much you guys think you can burn in the sauna.

why would sitting in a sauna burn more calories than just sitting on the couch? The heat will make you sweat, but like you said that is probably just water. I can't see how it would burn more calories.

What's it matter, you said it yourself, whatever water weight you burn from sweating you'll replenish it once you start drinking water again, I mean how long do you plan on sitting in the sauna?

You can't burn any calories in the sauna. How can you? You're just sitting there. You're heart rate isn't elevated at all and you're basically not even moving. You can sit on your couch and it's the same thing.

Your body tries to cool itself down, thus burning cals.
Not a lot, but it still does.

well heat burns calories right? isnt a calorie measured by how much heat is in it or somethin lol . this is a good debate but I would think it would at least burn a few calories or at least raise your metabolism a little

a calorie the way we talk about it is actually a KILOcalorie which is:
"a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree at one atmosphere pressure; used by nutritionists to characterize the energy-producing potential in food"
So really the nature of a kilocal doesn't reallly determine what circumstances it would be used up under, i think that depends on whether your body thinks it needs more energy or not at any given point.

Not enough that losing the sauna and coming over to the other side of the gym where the weights are wouldn't be a more effective use of the time for 99.999% of them.
Sitting on one's lazy ass trying to steam off all of that accumulated fat is a pathetic waste of time.

Your body doesn't use calories to cool itself off, it uses calories to warm up. So go sit in a tub of ice water for 90 minutes...

I guess that this is what the RedLine drink is supposed to do also -- induce your body to enter the "shivering" state...

Agreed. That's what I thought sweating was for, to cool yourself down. The tub of ice water analogy is right. That must be the reason why after anytime I go swimming or am in a pool, it feels like I've lost weight. Because not only am I burning calories from being active in the water, but the water is almost always cooler than the air and my body.

Since burning calories creates heat, your metabolism would want to slow down in order to keep your body cooler...makes sense anyways, I thought that was why people feel lazy on really hot days...

you burn calories by raising your heart rate. plain and simple.
that's why the ice theory is a beeter way than the saunaa. not that I'm endorsing soaking in a tub of ice but, read a couple of articles that says this is an actual way to burn cals. But you can give me good old fashion cardio any day.
The sauna is good to clean out your pores like Yze said, it's also used to detox drug adicts.

I know you can burn calories for your body to warm up like you know when it's cold, whos to say that it doesent do it when it,s hot.
your body is 98.6%if your walking into the sauna, which is hotter than that, won't your body tempature raise,so your burn more calories right.
think about it,you can lose alot of weight in the summer.
i think the heat does something.
so what do you guys think is it a waste of time, should i take the extra 30 min
on cardio.
just go in there to relax my muscles 5-10 minutes
oh!also when i got a cold LOL

That is actually a KiloJoule isnt it?
Joules are the metric version, Calories are imperial...
When will you Americans switch to the metric system?!
You are the ONLY ones left and it is better....

But, what DOES happen when your body tries to cool itself down?

As you know, your body cools itself by sweating and opening blood vessels near the skin.
Heat will not help you burn more calories though, in order to protect your body from overheating, your thyriod aids by decreasing the amount of calories you burn. The act of using carbs and fat for energy creates a lot of heat as a by product; furthermore, a calorie is a measure of heat. Heres a little gee whiz: when your body gets real cold, it can resort to a special fat called brown fat. This brown fat is special because it creates an incredible amout of heat when it is used for energy.
Why do people lose more weight in the summer? ...simply because people can be more active in the summer, and also, some people retain less water when they sweat consistantly.

Mmm I find nothing showing humans have brown fat post infancy. Rodents and some other small mammals do however. All studies I find say as adults we do not have brown "baby" fat.

Yeah, we dont really rely on it these days, and we have virtually no brown fat stored, but I think we could if we needed it. Indians from a couple hundred years ago relied on it.
