Yawning in the gym
Hey guys, recently I've been yawning a lot in the gym especially after a set. It's kinda pissing me off cuz i feel that i might be having worse workouts and this could be a sign that i'm doing something wrong. i know that i'm not getting enough food cuz of work but i plan on fixing it. Anything else you guys can think of and let me know if yawning is a sign of something besides fatigue.

you made a thread about yawning, are you joking? I yawn all the time, I yawn while eating, I yawn while talking, I yawn while lifting, I even yawn while having sex but I don't go and make threads about it thinking its a worry. just yawn, breathe the free air
because its the only free thing you will ever find

Try to breathe in more deeply, I've noticed the same thing. Its a sign that you are either tired or you are not breathing in enough oxygen. I always breathe shallow for really no apparent reason besides possibly because I run alot and don't need as much air doing regular things, but thats not good. Breathe deep..

yawning is simply not getting enough oxygen for example cup ur hands around ur mouth and breath in and out so ur just breathign in ur breath....you'll yawn soon depending on how fast u breath
so it most likly it just requesting more oxygen cause all of yours is depleted for some reason or maybe are you holding your breath while doing exercises (unconsiosuly that is)

Bingo, for the most part.
Yawning has nothing to do with being tired. It's a reflexive action to get you to breathe more deeply. You could be going into oxygen debt, or simply low on oxygen. You yawn when you're getting ready to sleep because deep breathing is part of your sleep patterns, not simply because you're tired.
If a whole lot of people are in a poorly ventilated, warm area (like most gyms) you could be depleting the air of most of the oxygen. Take a walk around and do some deep breathing.

I heard that yawning is caused by not drinking enough water during your workout...

This is an important thread.
It's been said twice, that yawning is lack of oxygen to the brain. If you do some research and google it, you'll find out it's true.
Make breathing a concious effort. It will help you lift, and it will also help clear waste bi-products from the muscle tissue.
Good stuff.

It could also be the adrenaline in your blood. I saw a study somewhere that proved that. It showed how many athletes yawn right before a tournament/trackmeet/game. Unless you feel tired dont worry about it.

Yawning is infact a mystery to science. There are many theories, such as not enough oxygen, not enough sleep, a non verbal communication, but none are proven, there is no reasonable and strong enough explanation to explain yawning as of yet.
"The idea behind this (the most popular) theory is that yawning causes you to take a deep breath when you need some extra oxygen - perhaps because you are tired are have not been breathing enough. There are MANY problems with this idea, but the main problem is that yawning occurs only when you are tired and does not occur in the many other instances of hypoxia. For example, if you exercise hard you need more oxygen - but your body makes you breath harder, not yawn! If you are brought from, say, sea-level to an elevation of 20,000 feet within a time period of 5 min, you will immediately faint due to severe hypoxia, but you will not yawn. "
That is why the oxygen theory is flawed. The power of google

The most widely accepted theory of why we yawn is because we go from a period of activity to inactivity. Of factors do occur though. However, this explains why people always yawn after a set when they are resting.

i have the same problem too.. ive always wondered if it was a sign taht i wasnt working hard enough.. ive pushed my ass through countless sets and still come out yawning.. i just think its a sign of the body trying to slow itself down from the intense workout

I see it as a sign of dedication. Someone is tired and yawning in the gym between sets yet they are still lifting heavy weight while most people would be home on the couch.
