The dumbells are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too small to be 170s.
They look more like 135-140 pounders, not 170 pounders. 12 10-pound plates, 2 7.5pound plates (maybe they are only 5 pound plates), and the handle (5 pounds).

We have a winner!!!
I laughed and laughed when I was flipping through the magazine at the gym ... seen "170" and was like -- Man, I've handled dumbells that 'small' before!
Counted up the plates to find 135. I doubt that handle is 35 pounds either

Its like on looney tunes when Bugs bunny would turn a switch from soft to medium to hard and then use a pen to write in the function of 'intensely hard' and turn to that one. Yep, it the exact same scenario.

Good ol Flex magazine, always good for staged workout photos.....remember Nasser bragging in his video how he pressed 200 pounders for Flex pictures then proceeds to struggle with 140's for a couple reps.

That's it.
This is slightly off-topic, but I want Pro Bodybuilding to go mainstream as much as anyone else, howeverpictures like this are part of the problem. Seriously, just look at that haircut. I remember the first time I ever cracked open a bodybuilding book (Arnold's book when it first came out) and I saw (name removed because the guy is cool and posts on here occasionally)'s haircut and just said "Oh my God". It's all got to go, guys, the tiny tank-tops, the "big man" strangly cut shirts/ fleeces, the Daisy Dukes, the ninja headbands, the cut-off overalls...in fact, no one should be working out in any type/ variation of denim...ever. Even the fanny packs have to go.
Im sorry, but bodybuilding will never appeal to the masses as long as people are dressed like that.
I must admit, though, Jay's Rhinestone belt is an excellent piece of workout equipment.

No they're not. the heavy dumbbells(150+) made by Ivanko have thicker heavier handles. The ones he's holding do not, and they obviously have the 10 lb standard plate. Typical pro bber trick photography.

That's because their workout clothes don't have pockets big enough for wallets or pockets at all. It's either fanny packs or those little backpacks chicks use to wear.

Ivanko also uses 21 1/2 pound plates for larger dumbells such as the ones displayed in the picture. Look at Gunderson' Brute Strength Program when the pic of him doing shoulder presses, those are 21 1/2 punds plates.

Haha, I always find it funny how IFBB pros seem to be using very light weights in magazine pics. I guess Cutler got tired of everybody seeing him weak.

They use them light weights because it is, in fact, only for a photograph. The photographers don't give a damn about the weights, they just tell the bodybuilder to take that dumbell and do something cool with it so the photographers can take that cool picture to get some money.
I think it's up to the bodybuilder to decide what weights he will use.
