Did HIIT for 1st time. 2 hrs later, heart still fast. Is this normal?

Hi guys,
I did HIIT on an eliptical machine for the first time tonight.
I did it for about 18 minutes plus 2 mins of warm up.

I did my best to get my heartrate really up, but the best I got
it was 155 bpm. So I did some thing close to 1:3 ratio.
1 min @155, then 3 mins @125.

Its been 2 hours later and my heart is still beating pretty fast.
At least faster than norm!

Is this normal?

Also, when I got home my veins on my head were pretty big! LOL

that's why you do HIIT To increase your heart rate not just during your workout, but post workout as well. good job, try to get down your rest interval equal to the sprint interval (ie. 1 minute sprint, 1 minute rest). good job!

Isn't your rest interval supposed to be double or even triple the time of the sprinting?

Yeah, I recently switched from my normal cardio to HIIT and couldn't believe the difference.

My old routine consisted of treadmill (15min @ 8mph), bike (20min @ 165bpm), eliptical (30min @ 165bpm)... I could finish this with no problems and *NOT* feel exhausted.

When I tried HIIT for the *FIRST* time, I couldn't even do 10min of it. Heart was racing for hours afterwards... don't push yourself too much in the beginning just in case, and know your limits!

Thanks Guys for all the replies!!

So I guess I am doing it right...or at least starting to.

Is 150-155bpm too low?
Its pretty hard for me to get it up higher within 1 min
on an eliptical even at level 13 out of 20.

It seems to be working though!

I plan to do it 3 days a week for now.

Its actually makes the 20 mins go by fast.

HIIT will raise your core body temperature for several hours. one time i tried it at like almost 8 p.m. at 11, i couldn't fall asleep cuz all my systems were jacked up. HIIT has been shown to raise your metabolic rate for up to 24 hours. now, that's fat burning.

I'm so excited because at first I thought my college didn't have a spot for me to do HIIT sprinting .. so I was depressed since I thought I was gonna have to wait until summer when I go home in 4 weeks .. but today I just found the football practice field and used that! Although I didn't go all out today cuz of my friggin' legs still sore from lifting yesterday. Oh well .. I guess I'll take a week off from lifting with my legs so that I can do some HIIT. w0ot!

just started hiit

I have always hated aerobic due to the time it takes.
Most of the time I would just skip it.

I just started hiit this week.
30s at 50% max
30s at MAXIMUM
either on bicycle, or stairmaster

my heart rate was getting up to 185 bpm
after 3x I can only do about 6 cycles.

I usually lift at 7:30pm
and then do aerobic afterwards. All of this week I have NOT been able to sleep. This has NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE....
what a difference.

jacks up the system.

unfortunately I have to lift at night, so hopefully my body will adjust, so that I can get some sleep (over 4 days I am floating on a total of 16hrs)

check to see if this ever happens during other activities like playign sports or something.. cause it happens to me and its called wpw syndrome and its like ur heart has a double beat when u do like hard running.. i havent had it do anythign during lifting so im guessing it doesnt happen during weight training only running/basketball for me
