have to phone a guy today to tell him i dont want the job
i went for a job interview a week ago, and the interviewer said he'd call me this week if i got it.
He phoned me, but i missed, and he left me a message asking me to call him back asap, so im pretty sure he gave me the job.
anyway, something better has potentially come up. would i be an ass if i called him up and said i no longer needed it...even though he's contacted my reference's and everything?.
i feel like a d!ck.

Not at all, that happens all the time. Typically people go on multiple interviews when looking for a new job and if you don't suck at interviews you are likely to be offered multiple jobs and then pick the best one

Just be completely honest and while he might be slightly irritated he will be much more likely to respect you for being a man . Always be direct without trying to be a dick .

This situation is likely to happen a lot over the course of your proffessional career. Just one of the aspects of competitve business. You're potential employer knows that, and will most likely be very understanding.
Like others have said, be very straight forward and remain proffessional and you will leave that door open should you ever want or need to return.

I've done it before, its all part of the process of trying to find work, and an employer trying to find a good employee. They have to get in fast before something better comes along to snap you up. He might be a bit disappointed, but as has been said in previous posts, its nothing personal.

I used to feel a bit anxious and apprehensive with stuff like this, but just call him, tell him that you appreciate the offer but chose to pursue an alternative route and thank him for his time.
Business is business, nothing more.

Don't feel bad, they'd fire your ass if you didn't perform without a second thought. Sometimes you gotta be ruthless (but not a dick) too
