Body Type + Body Goals Help!

Hi all,
Below are my body stats:

Height: 5'8
Weight: 172 lb (78.2kg)
Bodyfat: 19.8%
Waist: 35"

Chest: 38"
Arms: 12"
Hips: 40"

Thighs: 22"
Calves: 15"

Forearms: 9.5"
Shoulders: 47"
Neck: 15"

Here is my bodyspace link where you can see a picture of my body: http://bodyspace.bodybuilding.com/oli_099/

OK, now for the question... i want to look lean and muscular. However, my body fat is at 19.8% and my waist is 35", so i have some extra body fat.

I am having trouble setting up a goal... i want to build muscle, however, my maintenance number of calories is 2700 per day, and i'm eating 3000 (300 more than maintenance) to add to muscle growth. my concern is that in the process of building muscle tissue and weight, i will also put on fat by consuming these extra 300 calories...

could anyone advise me on this. Can i build muscle tissue and weight, and lose the fat all in the same process, whilst continuing with my 300 extra calories for muscle growth per day??

In short, what should my goals be at this stage??

help much appreciated

oli

Fat loss is just not gonna happen with a calorie surplus. If you gain muscle, your overall body fat % may go down and you may appear more lean, but that is just a ratio, and you will not have actually lost any fat. Typically, while bulking, most people will actually gain body fat % because gaining muscle is more difficult than losing fat and it takes alot of food to create muscle, so they "overdo it" in a sense.
Since you said, "i want to look lean and muscular," I think you'd be really happy with the results of a cut right now. It's not as if you're completely scrawny muscular-wise, and lowering your bf% will make make you look more muscular than you really are. Also, a study that I read showed that muscular growth occurs at a higher rate in people with a lower bf %. You might even be able to make some minimal gains in muscle even while you're cutting. So, if I were you, I'd start off eating 2200-2300 calories per day, no less. This should give you about a pound per week weight loss, assuming that your maintenance is 2700. You'll have to cut your calories even more as you lose weight, so reassess your maintence every two weeks and continue to eat 500 calories less than your maintenance. I'd cut for like 4-6 months and then bulk.
I'm assuming that you're new, and I hope that this helped. But before you ask any more questions, read through all the stickies. Start here:

Dude i think 19.8%bf is kinda high dont start bulking at this stage because if ur bf goes too high it would be more difficult for u to bring it down....
Ur main goal should be reaching 10-12% bf and start bulking from there
i think this diet will suit u best
