How important is it that I learn how to deadlift?
I know that it's part of the big 3 (bench and squat being the other 2) but i've never deadlifted before in my life. I didnt play football in high school, nor did i ever take a weight training class. i also dont work out with anyone that knows the proper form either.
so, is it important that i watch numerous video's and read articles and just try to teach myself?

From what i've learned..
..it's deadlift or die.
No it's not 100% essential.

i find deadlifts and squats to be the most satisfying and also scariest exercises to do. I love the feeling of power and adrenaline rush I get from doing them, and I also relly appreciate how much they do for my whole body. To me learning to do them right and doing them is a part of going to the gym to make the best gains you can.

You should learn how to deadlift if you want to deadlift. If you don't want to deadlift don't bother.
Why is it necessary to state the obvious in this forum?

its a question of whether the benefits out way the problems of learning to deadlift with no one at the gym teaching me proper form.
the same thing happened with me and squatting, but fortunately, i had a friend to teach me the proper way and point things out as i did it. well, that friend is gone now, so i dont have anyone to show me first hand.
i just wanted to post this in here to see what you guys thought.

People overrate the whole injury thing of deadlifts.
Keep the back straight and you'll be fine.
Some people like to bend the knees more, others like to keep them more straight and bend over instead (no homo), it's really down to finding for yourself what you like best.

The deadlift is one of the best exercises to pack on muscle. If you are looking to get big, learn to deadlift. Just start out with light weights until you get the hang of it. Then just keep adding a little weight each workout. Before long you will be using some big weights and getting bigger.

I agree that you should start with lighter weights if you're new to deadlifts or you could take your back out!!
I think they are definitely a must, though. I LOVELOVELOVE deadlifts and I think you will too

its one lift... not that important to learn, though you would probably feel empty just to not know how to do them
