Honey, hot cocoa powder, I know some people who use Ovaltine Malt mix (it has maltodextrin)
If you want to buy a carb powder, NOW foods has malto in a 7 lb tub for I think $15 on *********
For the oats, I just get Quaker rolled oats (quick oats or old fashioned style) from Wal-Mart, nothing special about em

Raw oats, grind them up in a coffee bean grinder then put it in your shake!

Dextrose is just a simple sugar. Oats have quite a wide array of benefits [1], but generally: they're low-GI, dirt-cheap, good source of beta-glucan, and are just amazingly convenient.

Why use nutritionally inferior carb sources? Why not get beneficial fibers/beta-glucan, trace vitamins/minerals, whole grain, etc. as opposed to a high-GI simple sugar that has no real redeeming value other than the fact that it's 'a carb source'.
I swear, the downfall of many newcomers to this game is 'designer' carb sources. Instead of nutrient-dense, meaningful carbs, simple sugars are used left & right to 'spike insulin bro...'. It's sad.

Banana+Oats+Whey would get my vote
My current shake is this:
1 medium banana
1tbsp honey
1 cup skim milk
1 scoop whey

Advice for newcomers?
As a newcomer, I've found some conflicting information on this site regarding post-workout shakes.
Consider for example, this "Topic of the Week":
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/topicoftheweek37.htm The top two responses to "What is a proper post-workout nutrition diet?" both recommend dextrose. Then I read in the article, "Bulking for Endomorphs" ( http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/beast41.htm) that dextrose is bad for endomorphs because it has a high GI and decreases insulin sensitivity. Then I come upon the thread, "Elements Challenging the Concept, Principle, & Strict Application of Glycemic Index" ( http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...hreadid=283787) that says it's all hype. Then finally I come to this thread that says that dextrose is fine, but it would be much better to use whole food sources for better nutrition.
Any advice for newcomers how to sort all this out? Because I bought 2 lbs of dextrose from bb.com and 4 lbs of maltodextrin (on sale at the local health food co-op) and I'm thinking I wasted my money. But then again, maybe I can just use it up and switch my diet later, and it won't be a big deal after all...

Maltodextrin is fine IMO, but I would never touch dextrose. Trial and error is how you sort it out. I got fat again when I used dex, so I went back to whole foods.

I like using dextrose PWO. I have a whey shake then I mix my creatine into Gatoraid powder wich has dextrose in it, and eat a banana. Dextrose for me FTW
And about oats, they are a college student's best friend. Just throw em in a bowl no need to cook em and pour some milk over em and down they go. Such an easy and benificial carb source
