Noobs - Make sure your forms right.
Ive been working out for 6 months and it wasn't until today that I found out I was doing some exercises wrong. I was doing Lat pulldowns and this well known bloke whos bodybuilded for 38 years said sumit like "I dont usually tell people what to do but i've seen you in here for a while and I thought id better tell you that your doing that wrong" Apparantly I was leaning back too much and he said he see's loads of people doing this. I think that's where I got this bad habit from. After that I went on to do overhead extensions for my triceps. As I was doing them he comes over and pushes my arms in towards my head. As soon as he did it I felt my triceps burn like hell, it was great. I wish he approached me sooner, I might actually be a bit bigger but you live and learn..
Cliffs
- Guy approaches me, tells me i'm doing Lat pulldowns wrong, I was leaning back too much
- Was doing overhead extensions for triceps and my elbows were to far out, when I brought them in towards my head, they burnt 10x more.
I thought I might aswell share this because apparantly it's very common.

lol yeah all the other teen guys who do lat pulldowns at my gym lean riiight back so its almost like a row, then they jerk the weight down, body shaking everywhere. Looks funny.
And then theres the people who rock back and forth on the *seated cable row*, doing about 3 reps a second. I feel like suggesting the cardio rowing machine which sits right next to them.

it's not really a case of doing it 'wrong', what you were doing was probably fine, just working a different part of the muscle group
but probably will help a few people (y)

Same thing happened to me 6 months in. Within a week 3 different people corrected me on things. It's weird because no one ever said something when I first started. Maybe once they see you are at the gym to stay they might as well help.

Nice to know he wasn't an ass about it as people sometimes can be.

I used to get that a lot. But then I decided to have a PT overhaul my routine and watch me closely on my form. Most was fine, just a few glitches whereby I could actually hit the muscle harder with less effort and less engagement of the biceps/triceps etc.

Yeah I really respect him, I think he knows I'm dedicated now because he always sees me in there. I think he's one of them blokes who makes sure his form is perfect. He has a massive chest and whenever I see him he only benches 22.5 Kg Dumbells on each arm, but he does each rep really slowly, and does like 12-15 reps.

isnt it common knowledge to keep your elbows in on tricep movements, keep your elbows back on curls, keep back straight on deadlifts, not to lean back on pulldowns, not to jerk the weight...etc?
or do some people just say to themselves im going to start going to the gym today even though I dont knwo what im doing...its like cooking and not knowing how to prepare the dish
as a result...salmonella woohoo
It was nice of him to help you out though
I would of told him he has no right to touch me and scream "THATS MY PURSE" and kick him in the nuts

As someone said I was still working my muscles but I could of been working them harder. And if that last statement was true, you sound like an ignorant person.

they do Number 2 because common knowledge is not so common
LOL this reminds me of this guy
he was doing pull downs leaning back jerking the weight LMao he had like 175 on the thing then after that he proceeds to push on his straps and starts jerking down 200+ it was mad funny cuz the big guy working in with him only had 175 and had much better development

reminds me of when i was in guelph
2 guys were on the bench press b4 me, and i asked how many sets they had left and they send 2 each, so i just walked round and kinda watched them.
1 friend loads up 2 45's on each side im like **** son! he then gets his friend to help him lift the bar, then proceeds to go down maybe 4 inches, and his friend was helping him too! im not even joking it was like 4 inches!
then his friend goes on, takes off a 45 on each side and puts up a 10, and does perfect reps, nice and slow, no help, touching his chest
and after his set, his friend has the nerve to tell him hes weak and needs to work on his bench press!

Not in my gym, the more experienced guy in there who's the owner tell me not to do squats and deadlifts, but I do them either way, none of the gyms in my city have a squat rack from what I have searched. It sucks.

It's very common. It's good that someone was willing to help you out so you didn't hurt yourself. Problem I have seen is that some watch these videos of the pros and use that form for a specific exercise. Yes some of them are right but some of them would kill some of us.
