I know. The child's hand is so emaciated it barely looks human. I think that most people need to look at these and realise that we have no idea what kind of suffering some people endure. Our own lives don't look so bad somehow..

Our life is a piece of cake in comparison....
But I don't know why the winners seem to be all pictures of suffering..

True. I suppose it's because the photographers themselves have put themselves in danger by taking the picture. But I think the main reason is that everybody likes to see happy pictures, they're plastered all over the place. Most people will turn away or simply try to ignore these pictures when they see what they contain, and then try and carry on moaning about taxes, hospital waiting lists etc as if they never saw them.
It's hard to accept that there are always people out there far worse off than ourselves, and it brings about a feeling of guilt that these things are happening. They win because they are the pictures than no-one wants to see, but they are there nevertheless.
