is trance/techno-ish stuff popular in the US?
i'm in alaska, and here, it's like 1995, and i'm really kept out of the loop. i'm just curious to know how popular music like ATB, 4 strings, ferry corsten, etc is in the lower 48 (our term for the continental US). does it get much or any radio play? do they play this type of **** in clubs? do they ever tour the US?
i'm currently writing an album close to these genre's and i just want to know how it will be received.
all flamer comments like "trance sux" will be negged.

not much radio play, except on certain stations or limited times.
yes, played in clubs, and raves and parties.
yes, they tour all the time.
it's big in the US, bigger in europe.

Like everyone else said, it all depends on the area. Here in the Northeast, it is popular for people in college and young adults - really anyone that goes to clubs. The most air-time that they receive in my area are from Internet radio stations, or satellite radio - it is not common to find on normal FM stations. I spent 2 months in the UK working at the beginning of this summer, and it is HUGE. Not nearly as big in the US as over the pond, but it has its growing niche.

speaking of radio stations... there is an excellent american station that plays a lot of electronic music. not necessarily just trance or commercial club music, but d&b, IDM, all styles of house, techno and trance, as well as some very ecclectic stuff you'll never hear elsewhere, with a lot of guests. my favorite radio station by far.
KCRW.org
if you're ever in LA, hit up 89.9 on a friday or saturday night for some of the best music anywhere.

i currently live in norcal. i don't know anyone whos listens to edm.. i actually get hated on by friends for listening to it lol they talk to me like they never heard of trance before. hiphop/rock and pop reign in america. So im gonna have to say No its not popular here in the U.S. compared to europe. sure theres 4 or 5 huge raves in L.A. and S.F. but thats it. turn on mtv or vh1 you won't see anything related to edm ever. the last thing i saw that comes close was da rude-sandstorm which was 10 years ago Lol.

joo need new flens.
the house scene in SF is huge, and the club scene has blown up in LA. i still get flyers for parties in california, and there is tons of talent to see every weekend- in bars, clubs and underground. yah, there might be about a half dozen massives a year, but there's plenty in between.

trance has no place in America, cept some pocket guido communities hahah. in the mid 80's the midwest US invented house and techno, and then Euro bitches turn around and make ****ty ass "trance" music with lame chipmunk girly vocals and lots of cologne. WTF. i see techno coming back though, raves are definitely picking up again because of the rave act/bill thingy being recently lifted. good luck.

I don't fully understand the differences between the genres, but if Ferry Corsten does trance (and I think he does) then I've got a taste for it.
But no, it doesn't seem to be as popular here in the US as it is in Europe. Here we have... rap. *long sigh*

i get this feeling that rap/hip hop is heading towards this area, though. i can hear it in some of the music. you're starting to hear certain synth sounds being used in hiphop, and they have picked up the "trance gate" (where a sound will, in essense, cut in and out at a specific rhythm). i wouldn't necessarily say they're heading towards trance, specifically, but i can definately see it going somewhere in that direction.

haha i know
its ok though because i made/met ppl on bb.com who also enjoys this music. it is nice to actually see other people into electro music. literally not one of my RL friends listens like i do Lol and it shows how popular hiphop really is in america.
i also understand what u mean though how its huge in SF and LA but what i meant to say was trance isnt as mainstream compared to other countries outside of the US. **** i didnt even know they had music videos for some of these songs haha

What i would say is becoming more popular in America is "trance-fusion" or also known as "live-tronica". Bands that are stemming from the jam band scene who play live sets with instruments but incorporate electronic sounds and beats into their music.
Bands such as:
The Disco Biscuits
Sound Tribe Sector Nine
The New Deal
The Join
Future Rock
Because alot of these trance-fusion bands have become very popular, their fans are also crossing over and enjoying trance, house, and other electronic acts. Music festivals such as "Starscape Music Festival" and "Camp Bisco" are perfect examples. The funny part is these people arent ravers, but half of them look like hippy dead heads who get down to elctronic music. I just returned from Camp Bisco 6 this past weekend, headlined by three nights of the Disco Biscuits. The festival was 3 days long, and also included trance and electronic acts such as:
Infected Mushroom
Ott
Shpongle
Hallucinogen in Dub
Amon Tobin
Bassnectar
Juan Maclean
Orchard Lounge
Psylab
check out more www.campbisco.net
The whole jamband scene is being overtaken by electronic music, String Cheese Incident is breaking apart and Have formed "Eoto" that play house, DnB,and downtempo, bereakbeat. Out of stringcheese also formed Zilla, that also plays trance music. So i would definetley say trance is becoming more popular, but u dont here it on the radio unless weekend nights.

excellent post. my friend introduced me to sound tribe sector nine and the new deal. but my favorite electronic jam band has to be particle. it was only a matter of time before jam bands and electronic music got married. i love the way the music slowly evolves, growing and receding in complexity, with all the different layers of sounds, pads, textures, and rhythms. i went to bele chere a few years ago in asheville; no electronic bands, but plenty of jam bands, and it was unbelieveable.
ain't no reason for hippies not to get into the music. hippies have generally been more open minded, and i'm sure the psychedlic nature of the music is attractive. i went to a lot of raves in california, and there was always a healthy dose of hippy at these events.
i'm trying to incorporate bluesgrass, brass band, and jam bands into my sets. one day... one day.

Saw Infected Mushroom and Booka Shade at the Virgin Music Festival a coupla weekends ago and they had live rock/drum elements. It was pretty tight.
Are you telling me that the String Cheese incident is turning techno? POURQUE!!?!?!
