Multivitamins: Why your piss will be neon green!
Okay had a chat with my anatomical science lecturer today as i was a bit worried about it too.
If you take a multi (especially the athletic crazy 100000% rdi multi's)
your piss will turn neon green. No amount of water intake will stop it.
This is due to your kidney filtration system.
Multi's are great and will help you in boosting the vitamins that you ARE deficient in.
However for the vitamins that you are getting enough of, they simply pass
through the convoluted tubules and collecting duct of the kidneys and out in urine. They will not get reabsorbed because your body does not need them.
Also, Some multi's you will notice the effect in urine straight away, others later. This is due to the absorbing properties in the particular Multi.
Acidic multi's break down in the stomach acid in your stomach for quick absorption
Base multi's will travel through your stomach to the small intestine and act as "slow releaser's"
And finally why you need to take several a day...
well it depends on the particular "half life" of your multi product.
Some have a shorter half life and you will need to take more for full absorption of the product's recommended dietary intake.
This was just a general discussion with my human biology lecturer so its basic background to killing worries about the neon green piss.
So enjoy your multi's and dont stress, you are still getting a lot out of
your multi and simply filtering out anything that you don't need!
Hope this helps

It's the excess B-vitamins that cause the colored urine. B-vitamins are water-soluble, which allows them to be taken in excess because the extra will simply be excreted.
This is generally a pretty well known topic as well.
Enjoy the rest of your freshman biology class though.

So is it a result of the body no longer needing the excess vit B?
How much water is retained during the kidney filtration process
because if they are water soluble wouldn't they readily diffuse out of the filtrate in the collecting tubule?
Would the excess Vit B change the concentration of ADH in the kidney?
as i said i just asked the lecturer so he gave me a brief jist on the subject
Thanks for clearing it up for me.
Chem units are so depressing for me haha.

I'm pretty sure the neon green piss is caused by an excess of Vitamin B-12. The first time you see it, it can be a little shocking, but after awhile you think it's weird when you don't see it.

(By the way, this thread was posted in the wrong section.)

I wonder if a liquid multi would be better? It wouldn't have to be broken down in your system because its liquid so it may be better. Any comments on this guys?

Not if it contains riboflavin.

I was talking to a guy at Max Muscle and he said that liquid multi-vitamins have a much better absorption rate into your system than pills do. He said that pills have about a 10% absorption rate where as liquid has about a 90% absorption rate.
So if that's true, then I'd say that Liquid Multi-Vitamins are much better than Pills.

It turns yellow from B2 (riboflavin). No need for so much verbage for small fact.

So we get 90% absorption from liquids, but we only get 10% absorption from food?
.... The guy is full of SH!T.
