Why don't you use bare fists? It toughens them up and that way you can make sure you're hitting with the knuckle of your middle finger!

No that's a stupid idea. If you can only get one get the wraps and learn how to wrap them properly. Dom is right about hitting with the middle finger (and index finger) though. Make sure the point of impact is those two fingers.

ya wanna get wraps they are a lot better than gloves, wen i started boxing with just gloves i cut my knukles up to **** , so i then got wraps and they wer gr8 , and also , wraps under gloves is very good for a high intensity training, it lets you put alot more force in your punch ALOT

Gloves, people who hit the bag with bare knuckels or just wraps most likley hit like girls. Gloves + wraps is the best, personally I never use wraps in training, I know most trainers say you should, but 8 years and I havn't had a problem yet. I've had 3 broken knuckles from fights though.

the way i went about my boxing was to first train with no gloves or wraps cos i cudnt get any at the time , so my punches became a lot more accurate and i never bend my wrist or mis**** the bag , and now that i have gloves and wraps i saw how much harder i could punch and the difference is pretty big becos your knukles wont break so u can unleash fully on the muthafUker

Punching with neither gloves nor wraps will not only bust up the skin on your knuckles, it will also massively increase your chances of developing arthritis at an early age.
No matter how many times I say that I know there will still be a bunch of people who think making their knuckles bleed makes them tough.
For the record: they are about as tough as emo kids who cut up their arms.
Don't hit the heavy bag without protection.
Buy gloves, I am incredulous about your claims at not being able to afford wraps as well.

long story about not being able to get wraps , but any way more importantly , punching without protection gives you arthriteus , actuallly that does make a lot of sense , because when i nevr used to use gloves my knuckles cracked alot and were stiff, but now i have stopped doing boxing because i cannot fight with my braces, so i gave it up and am now into basketball , but the arthritus thing , is there anyway of telling you have it ?u got me worried now , when i did it tho , i only trained without gloves at the start to warm up as im not trying to hit the bag hard , but work on speed.

I'm sure you're fine, just keep it in mind if you ever decide to box again.

Source on the arthritis comment?
On the knuckles getting roughed up have you heard of body hardening? It is quite a common occurance in martial arts, like what muay thai does to the bare shins after awhile. hitting frequently with no protection kills nerve endings and causes bones to solidify. I think in some cases hitting the bag with no gloves is beneficial, but not in most. The OP, like myself, does not have the experience and tough hands to deal with it, but some experienced folks do. I just hate the blanket statement that everyone should never hit a heavy bag without gloves/wraps. just my $.02

You definitely want gloves for the heavy bag. I have a pair of 16oz fairtex gloves for the bag.

ultimately, its recommended that u wear the wraps + the gloves for maximum protection on your hand and wrist.
