Chris Hansen and NBC may have gone too far...
http://www.newsvine.com/_news/2007/0...teline-suicide
In the "Dateline NBC: To Catch a Predator" show, men accused of having explicit online chats with people they think are underage children go to a house to meet them, where TV cameras, host Chris Hansen and police await.
Louis William Conradt Jr., of Terrell, Texas, a Dallas suburb, was suspected of being one of those men, except he didn't show up at the house. That didn't stop the TV producers and police from showing up at his, though, and as officers knocked on his door and a camera crew waited in the street, Conradt shot and killed himself.
His sister, Patricia Conradt, sued NBC Universal Inc. in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Monday for $105 million, accusing it of taking over police duties and then failing to protect her brother....
The lawsuit said Conradt Jr., 57, an assistant county prosecutor, shot himself after he was accused of engaging in a sexually explicit online chat with an adult posing as a 13-year-old boy. It said a police officer at the scene of the shooting told a "Dateline" producer: "That'll make good TV."
In the lawsuit, Patricia Conradt said NBC was "concerned more with its own profits than with pedophilia."
Yes, the guys they catch are creeps and need help... but then again, who made NBC the designated bounty hunter for this? chris hansen does his job well, but you have to believe that the network has a higher agenda. Higher ratings/more viewers= more money... just sayin.
= ????

im not trying to defend these sickos.
but look at the show. all it is, is someone on a computer, pretending to be a 13 year-old whatever, and they set up a time to catch the crazy.
do we REALLY need a show about that? a show that costs NBC maybe a couple thousand for the trouble, their making MILLIONS with their ratings...
2 wrongs dont make a right...

you've been brought up with computers and you know what the internet's like. not everyone does, though, or else some people underestimate the danger of these guys. it raises people's awareness; this is a topic that parents should be discussing with their kids. in fact, i don't think it's a bad idea for parents to watch the show with their kids. you get to see that these guys look normal, not like some crazy monster. a child molester can be anyone: a handsome 21 yr. old or a weird, ugly 70 yr. old.

i understand what your saying, but i think most people DO know the show. and to be as so gulible in this day in age as to think their arent sickos on the computer is just unthinkable to me.
but i assume you are a parent, and i of course am not. so i know things become more personal when you become one, and that i probably wont fully understand until i become one too. but even so, you cant say NBC is just doing this outta the goodness of their hearts.

If they make millions off of it, but its getting the word out on this stuff then who cares...........................
BUT........I do think going to the guys house is going too far. If he didnt come over then he was probably just living out some sick fetish online and may not have even intended to do anything in real life. They probably didnt get anyone to bite lately so it took it one step further. Its like crack this tv stuff. They gotta get their fix no matter what lines they cross

hey, if they want to make money while helping society, that's fine by me. they also have "how to catch an identity thief." again, if they're helping to expose criminals, it's worth air time.

Please don't clump hopping on a computer and going into a chatroom and talking dirty to a 15 year old girl with raping a person.
Thank you.

Well I am a parent and while I totally agree with openly talking to our kids about this issue and increasing awareness, I think what they did/are doing is wrong.
If they were helping to catch these guys, but not showing it on TV, I would probably have a different opinion.
In any case aren't people supposed to be innocent until proven guilty? So fine help the police entrap these people, but as soon as you put it on TV you effectively condemn them without even a trial. Obviously the guys that turn up to the 'meeting' are very, very likely to be guilty, but still doesn't make it OK IMO.

I actually think it is great they are doing this, it raises awareness... I use to be an irc addict back in the 90s and... there was a lot of **** that went on that was pretty bad, with people I knew as well...
the story itself though with that guy should have only been a charge of soliciting or something and a slap on the rest, not a pedophile case.

I don't think Hansen and his crew of PJ members have the rights to go kickdooring people. Thats the polices job, leave it to the goddamn police and tell CH to stay at home so this kinda **** doesn't happen. If they go into a house thats one thing, but CH and co. can't just go around storming peoples front lawns w/ their camera crews and ****.
