So should I give him two weeks... (serious)
or just quit? I'm talking about quiting my job of course. I've been working at a grocery store over the summer as my first real job and i've decided i don't want to work during school. I would just quit but I kind of want a good reference. The problem is I haven't been the best employee ever, not horrible but not amazing thats for sure. What should i do?

You should always give two weeks unless you're employer is not paying you. What kinda reference are you hoping for?

2 weeks, good reference is important when acquiring a new position. It's a more mature way to handle it.

Be straight up, tell him school is starting and you need to concentrate fully on that. Do your 2 weeks, get the reference and leave

yes for a good reference and to give them time to get a replacement so your co-workers don't have to pick up your slack

lol yah its just easier to find another summer job next year if i have a reference. But as other people said i have only been on the job a few months so i think my employer might be pissed and not even give me a good reference.

Do whatever you like... list him as a reference either way, nobody is going to call the grocery store manager to check up on the reference anyways, even if they do, they'll understand that it was a bag boy job... not like you left a huge project hanging that cost the company 1.2M in downtime due to your expertise being gone and important data not being retrieved in your absence.

thats a pretty dumb statement... no matter what the job is future employers want to know yo are reliable and seriuous about the work.. for many of us will get an entry level job outa school and do many meaningless tasks, you need to take it seriously, no matter what. and you can bet your ass they will call that manager, its a character thing, make a good impression, and always work like you need that reference.

I have gotten calls for former employees that listed me as a reference. So don't think it will not happen.
Also, before I list someone as a reference, I always contact them first to make sure it is OK. Some companies have a strick "only verify the timeframe that they worked there" policy. This is to avoid defamation of character lawsuits.
I have actually had a person that I had to fire because he wasn't showing up for work list me as a reference.
