It must be the "American" in me but I HATE authentic foreign food.....
Well, yesterday at work there was a potluck where everyone brought food from home. Of course there' always some foreigner bringingg in some nasty ass dish that everyone has to try. fortunate for me, I didn't eat anything because i'm in the middle of my cut.
ANYWAY This Filipino gal brings in -I kid you not- boiled duck embryos. She made 5 of them as if we were all going to "dig in" on these things. they had beaks and downfeathers, the feet were still attached with little claws and everything intact. I vaguely remember seeing bioled duck embryos as a food to eat on Fear Factor for crist sake!
I guess she was talking about it to another employee and he wanted to try it. I don't know if anyone ate any because I left to eat in the car. When I came back they were covered up. oh yeah , did I mention they smelled? you know, it may not have looked so bad if she had of fried them or something...........idk.
So this is a question for you non americans. Is there any food in our culture that you don't like? You take a look at these other cultures who eat these weirdo dishes and they eat it like its the best stuff on earth.
When it comes to me I have a few rules to eating food.
1. no raw meat
2. The only eggs I want to et are from Chickens
3. I don't want to eat the head of the animal
4. I don't want to eat the eyes of the animal
5. I don't want to eat any organs (with the exception of the skin on chicken)
6. I don't want to eat bugs
7. no slime
8. sorry, no curry or humus
9. I don't want to eat any reptiles or amphibians (sorry no frog)
10. and the animal I eat sure as hell better not be live. See youtube video below:
Oh and for rules 2 and 3. I don't even want to see it on my plate (sorry, no fish heads for me)
Seriously, how hard is it to just bring a potato salad? Chips and salsa? cheese and crackers? or a cassarole that follows the rules I posted?
I'll be honest, I'm pretty damn adventurous when it comes to food. I'll try raw meat, organs, fish heads, etc.... but I draw the line at immature ducks in the shell with feathers and ****.
What the hell was she thinking?

"Typically, bandeja paisa includes grilled steak (either ground or whole), chicharron (fried pork rind), red beans, rice, chorizo (sausage), a fried egg, and an arepa. It is usually accompanied by sweet fried plantains and a slice of avocado. Some versions include a tomato or sauces like hogao, a potato, or other ingredients."

It could have tasted good.....and probly very nutritious.
No way. I've had all sorts of "interesting" foods but no way. I saw what is in Balut (duck embryos) and I'm sure I'd eat it and smile in a post apocalyptic situation but srsly, until you've seen the stuff in your face swimming with tiny feathers and a duck fetus with it's eyes closed looking like it's sleeping.......just no dude.

LAWL I've had that in a place in Corona. They also deep fried their steak instead of grilling it. Delicious but it'll weigh you down for like 2 days.

oh, i've eaten curry before. I just can't stomach the smell and I like to know what i'm eating even if it is just a goulash mixture of chicken bones and a mystery sauce

Might be a delicacy in the Phillipines.... different cultures have different ideas about what is palatable....
With that said I won't eat too much weird food either
I understand that it's a delicacy. Hell, I'm Korean and we have this thing called Kimchi, it's delicious. It's basically fermented cabbage in all sorts of spices and sometimes squid, shrimp and oysters (fermented as well) and it smells worse than protein farts but I'd never bring it to a potluck where people who are not used to it would be, just based on smell alone. It doesn;t take a genius to figure out what the average person in this country calls "palatable". I'm sure there would be a couple people adventurous enough to try it but why bring something you know most people won't enjoy?

have definitely had that, but mine also came with calamari ! but yes it was a massive dish and the house specialty...very awesome.
I'll try anything once...why the hell not, you only live once. I eat pretty much any food from any culture except cellery and cantelope (serious). When i'm travelling, i go out of my way to try funky, traditional dishes.

X2
you've really got to see it up close. even these pics hardly do it justice. You need to get a whiff of the steam coming off the little embryos.
I honestly felt like puking when alb posted those pictures. I found a good excuse for getting out of eating anything that looks disgusting is that it's against your diet

I make it a point to try new foods when available. I love food and I love trying new foods, especially stuff that is rare or just not available in my area but, I'm not eating a fukcin duck embryo falling out of a cracked shell. She can have that.
