A barbell row seems to me very similar to a dumbbell rear delt row

The way your hands are positioned on a barbell row is the same as a rear delt row. Only difference is your on a bench for a rear delt row and your using a dumbbell.

In the exrx Barbell row he keeps his head down too, but at BB.com they say keep your head up.

P.S.
That exrx trainer is wicked strong I've been sitting here for 30 minutes and he still has yet to finish his set.

I agree. With a dumbbell it is easier to manipulate elbow positioning.

Did you lay on the bench prone or were you in a bent-over position (no homo)?

On the rear delt work, your upper arm and elbow ideally should be in line with the top of your shoulder, whereas for bent row work, your elbow will be pointing backward. Keep in mind the more flared the elbows, the more you're working your midback (rhomboids, etc.); the closer your elbows are to the sides of your torso, the mroe you're working your lats (when I say lats, I mean specifically, the latissimus dorsi, or sides of your back....some people just say "lats" for everything and it pisses me off. :-P )

bent over position, chest parallel to floor. i had the dumbells out hanging out from of me, knuckles facing away and i would rotate them so the palms face my side as i brought them up.
