It's probably a grip issue. Also I find that rubber DB's impact on my ROM as the same DB in rubber is generally wider than the same in iron.
Oh and sound, THE SOUND!!! Nothing beats the clang of iron plates during a heavy set, no satisfaction from rubber DB's... which may be your problem, less motivation

Yep.
PS: The clang of iron dumbells going together at the top of a rep is irritating as hell. I hate being in the gym with a clank and banger -- every god damned rep! BANG *grunt* BANG *grunt* BANG *grunt*. Not to say you need to be mouse-quiet, but FFS, don't slam them together at the top EVERY TIME.

I wouldn't say its in your head at all. My gold's just got some new bars. Much thicker. Big difference in the weight I can incline or shoulder press with them. Aorund a 15%-20% difference. Just how it rests in your hands and how direct the force is exerted on it. I definately prefer the regular diameter bars over thicker ones.
Also I LOATHE rubber dumbells. Bad experience, dropping a 150er after some shrugs... Bounced into my shin.
