Rows add thickness, pullups/chinups add width.

If you are only doing rows in your back routine you will not gain much width.

it's a common thought that pulldown/pullup type movements widen the back while rows thicken the back.
To an extent it may be true, somewhat. But in general rows will help make your back bigger. If your back is getting bigger aka your lats are growing, I assure you they will get wider.

my back is pretty ripped and i would like to add alot of thickness and overall mass to it and my whole body so i'm going to continue Rowing twice a week and deadlifting/chins once a week. what you said makes perfect sense

Sweet, so how would I get my pecs thicker? Not wider, just thicker. I want them to grow straight out from my chest without getting any wider. How would I do that?

One-armed-five-finger pushups should do it. But, make sure you work on form, k?

Reverse Nipple Lunges, or RNL. You have to do them at home though, because if you did them at teh gym, you'd be thrown out and arrested because no one really understands the legitimate use of Baby Oil (no Johnson).

Yes.. but if you're talking optimally rows add thickness and pullups/chinups add width. There's going to be overlaps in activated muscle groups for all back exercises so you can't just say x does this y does that, but for the most they do.

Rows invove a greater amount of scapular retraction and lumbar stabalization, therefore the trapezius and spinal erectors are hit more, causing "thickness"
Pull-ups are more adduction of the arm which is a lat/teres dominated movement, which tends to build up the area near the armpit causing "width"
The actuall difference in stimulation to the lats has more to do with grip width and line of pull. For example, a wide grip row will hit more upper fibers, technically making it a "width" move, where as close grip sternum chins hit the belly of the lats making it more "thickness"
In conclusion; most of you people don't know ****, and need to quit parroting others in an attempt to sound knowledgable.

personally in my opinion the whole chins/pulls add width and rows add thickness is bollocks, I think they work lats equally which grows as a whole (adding width and thickness) and the reason people think chins/pulls add width to lats is because they work the rhomboids and teres major/minor more which would make you wider, like I said just my opinion though.

finally some logic...
i grew lat width long before i was doing pullups/chinups (and rarely ever did pulldowns)
