The National Prep Football Poll is compiled by high school sports journalist Jamie DeMoney with input from sportswriters, experts, and coaches. The national Top 25 and expanded regional Top 25's follow with 2006 won-loss-tie records:

Following one of the more difficult deliberations in recent summers, St. Xavier (Cincinnati) has been pegged as the top-ranked team in the 2007 preseason National Prep Poll.

The Bombers, who return 16 starters including seven regulars off their 2005 undefeated state championship team, narrowly edged Carroll (Southlake, Texas), DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) and Northwestern (Miami) for the No. 1 nod.

Six St. Xavier players had received Division I scholarship offers by the end of the summer. Coach Steve Specht says a half dozen more are capable of playing at least at the Division I-AA level next year.

St. Xavier's superior overall schedule and continuity in its coaching staff were the deciding factors in this first poll. However, as with the teams ranked in spots 2 through 25, every team will be evaluated and re-evaluated during each week of the season.

The Bombers first major test of the season will come September 2 at the Kirk Herbstreit Classic in Cincinnati when they'll meet No. 3 DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.). The game is tenatively scheduled to be aired on ESPN.

1) Returning talent (impact players, Division I talent, etc.): St. X has six players with Division I offers as of July 1, according to their coach.

Two of the three other teams we gave serious consideration for preseason No. 1 did have more returning Division I talent than St. X. But the total number of potential of DI/IAA players is more similar than you think.

2) Returning experienced players: St X has 15 returning full-time starters, seven of whom started as sophs on the state championship team.

Only one of the three other teams we considered have as many starters returning (DeMatha). Southlake Carroll has only three starters back on defense.

3) Returning coaching staff: St X returns its entire coaching staff, which has a 36-3 cumulative record the last three seasons.

Two of the other three teams that we gave serious consideration to for the preseason No. 1 ranking enter the year with a new HC and new coordinators. One team (Miami NW) has an entirely new staff that didn't come on board until midway through July.

4) Strength of schedule: St X plays arguably the toughest regular season schedule in the country. Every team on its schedule had at least a 5-5 record last season (LaSalle and Moeller) with a cumulative record of 86-29. Probably five opponents will be in the Ohio Top 10 to start the year. In addition, they will play Top 5-ranked DeMatha, Top 50-ranked Glenville and Louisville Trinity, plus defending Indiana 3A champ Cathedral.

The three other teams we gave serious consideration to for preseason No. 1 do not play a regular season schedule that is comparable to St. X's. Miami Northwestern, for example, will play Southlake Carroll. However, the in-state teams on their schedule had only a combined 56-45-1 record last season and zero of those teams figure to be in the overall state Top 10 to start the season (probably not even the Top 20).

5) Ability to achieve a significant postseason championship. In our opinion, winning the Ohio D1 is often more difficult than winning a title in Texas, Florida or California because the large schools are split into more divisions in those states.

So, strength of schedule is a factor ... but it is not the ONLY factor.

Think of it as a stew ... beef is an ingredient, but not the ONLY ingredient.

They barely won against Moeller(Cincy, Ohio) 21-20 who lost in the first round(of five) in the Ohio play offs. They did not seem to impressive when I saw them

Wrong...Southlake is a public school. They lost the head coach to North Texas Univ. so we will see how well they do. The replacement coach was the asst. coach from the first state title.

I live in Southlake. During the playoffs all the kids dye their hair blonde its pretty funny when they come into the gym.

Cincinnati Colerain is not a prep school, and I dont think South Lake Carroll is either.


IMO SLC should be #1, but they did lose a LOT of starters

Glenville High School Cleveland, OH - had 22 Division 1 recruits in a 2 year period.. most by any school.. They always have athletes - but the coaching of Ginn Sr. is suspect.

And I agree with RXrugby - although they were good.. they wouldn't compete in any of the big football states. They weren't even that big or filled with talent when they were on MTV..

Wrong.. Those teams from Ohio aren't really "prep" schools. They are private schools, yes - but prep schools are much different. Prep schools recruit across the nation and it's more of a college in all practicality.

Those rankings were for all I think. But I know for a fact they weren't all prep schools. Real prep schools can't even compete in most state playoffs.

South Panola isnt a private school...They are in Mississippi, they havent lost a game in like 5 years they are awesome...The seniors who graduated this year never lost a game in their whole high school carrear...But the coach went to some school in Georiga I think...BUt the new head coach is the old offensive coordinator...

I know a lot of people that went to Saint X. I attend university of cincinnati. and the Saint X Vs. Moeller games sell out the UC football stadium more than the UC games do, lol

The St. Xavier-DeMatha (Md.) football game officially will be telecast nationally on ESPN on Sunday, Sept. 2 at noon. It is the marquee game of the Burger King Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge.

Danny Sternfield of Chicago-based Intersport, which is organizing the Herbstreit event, has confirmed the ESPN arrangement in an e-mail to me. Event organizers had been saying the event was probable to be telecast on ESPN, but final details were being arranged the past several weeks.

Sternfield also said the Clayton Northmont-Pittsburgh Central Catholic game, which follows the St. X game around 3 p.m., will be telecast on ESPNU.

The four Herbstreit games from Canton, which will be played Saturday Sept. 1 and do not involve any Cincinnati teams, will be televised on tape delay by the NFL Network, Sternfield said.

In cleveland, what Ginn is doing is fine. Focusing on getting a better life for some of those kids growing up in the inner-city.
