How did we ever manage to survive?
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!
First, we survived being born to mothers who .....
Took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live in us forever.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
There has been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!
And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

Man.. thys one probably kept me on the straight and narrow... My mom told me - "Act a fool if you want, but when you get locked up, don't call me. Now, go think about who else you can call." ...
I thought about it... If mom's couldn't/wouldn't bail me out... There was nobody else that would hahaha ... I have a syster & she tells her son the same thing... "If you get locked up... don't call me." ... If it worked for us...... ... ...
Peace. ~G.

1stindoor: If I had told me folks when they yelled at me that I was going to leave & call the social workers for child abuse, they would have said "don't let the door hit ya in the ass". Now when the politicians take away our rights & call it patriotism & wrap themselves in the flag we're supposed to re-elect them. Ahhhh...

The one that struck the truest for me was the one about siding with the law. My dad told me that if I was ever arrested, that I shouldn't call him, just rot in jail until my court date. Afterall, cops don't arrest you for nothing.
I've been putting this same nugget in my son's head since he was about 2. He can quote it verbatim.

Of course my Dad sided with the law. He was a COP!!!
I never got away with anything!
Worked out pretty well for me, I must say.

Great post. How DID we ever make it?
And lets not forget those whom, for one reason or another, didn't. I'm sure we all have had a few in our circle of friends.
We've had a long life, compared to those who had been cut short so young.

Great post,1st. Unfortunately it is also very sobering. We used to go out and disappear for the day with no worries. Now if I'm in the back yard and my daughter goes into the front yard, I'm uneasy.

Great post
My folks told me if I ever got locked up not to call them, I never got locked up. Got chased a few times on my enduro, damn that was fun. My dad told me once that if I ever came home with my ass whopped I'd get my ass kicked again from him!! As for the social worker thing, if I'd have ever said that to my folks, I'd be in a shallow grave out behind the barn, I have no doubts about that.

Never ate worms. Slugs make a good stew if you can't find any other meat. Use onion grass bulbs, some roots and tabasco sauce and its almost like escargot soup. You can throw in some mushrooms too, but you better know your mushrooms, you could get high, or get killed.
'scuse the Army E&E training reminiscence or was that a post Viet Nam flashback?

i liked the post, but at points it reminded me of how sometimes, people get in the way of progress by insisting that in the old days, blah, blah, blah, and i'm still here.. ya, but most likely you're still here due to advances in medicine and science that have 'helped' you survive this long...
when people start on that rant, i say:
"ya, and if my grandfather had left well enough alone, we'd still be
riding horses to work" LOL
best,
lifer
