Each muscle group once a week?

In the past I've normally done a fairly unorganized, unstructured split routine:
Monday - Upper
Tuesday - Lower
Wed - Break
Thursday - Upper
Friday - Lower
Sat - Light cardio
Sunday - Break

It just didn't work, each day I almost passed out by the time I was done. I felt I had to use so much energy per workout. Working out EVERY upper body muscle took a LOT of time, and a LOT of energy, I just didn't feel like it was really getting me anywhere.

I'm going to be getting a new routine going, I will be splitting my muscle groups up, and only working them out once a week.

For example,

Monday - Chest, triceps
Tuesday - Back, biceps

Bad example, but I'm just keeping it simple for now.

My question is will I be able to benefit from this, or is once per week just too much break time?

You set up your upper/lower body split poorly then.

My current workout is actually pretty much exactly like the example you listed:

Day 1: Chest, Triceps, Shoudlers
Day 2: Back Biceps
Day 3: Legs/Lower Back
Day OFF, then repeat

I end up working each body part twice every 8 days that way. So it's almost twice a week. I've been seeing very good results from this so far (almost two months in).

And I agree that you must have set up your upper/lower split poorly. Or you didn't eat enough.

I assume you've been using compounds? The fact that you've used up A LOT of energy is kind o the point...

An upper body day should be around 3-4 compounds and possibly an iso or two. If that's what you've been doing, your better off staying that way.
