Fat, diabetic, and need to lose weight

Hey guys,

This is my first post, and one you've probably seen a thousand times.

I've been fat as far back as I can remember, but only in the last couple years have I felt that it was starting to hinder me. Then, about a year ago, I learned I had type 2 diabetes (probably partly from being a fatty my whole life). I changed my lifestyle at that point and have lost 75 lbs so far. I've done this with a better diet and a good amount of cardio.

Currently I'm 265lbs (was 340 at my peak, about a year ago) and am 30 years old.

I want to start working out so I can boost my metabolism. From what I've read this will kick my weight loss into overdrive. I'm hoping you guys can help me because I'm feeling really lost and overwhelmed. Theres just so much info avaiable

Last year, when I learned I was diabetic, I reduced my carb input a lot. I follow a semi-low carb diet and here is an average day for me:
Breakfast: hotdog
Lunch: Salad, usually with some cut up chicken breast in it, and dressing, but not an obscene amount.
Dinner: Some Grilled Asada (thin mexican steak) and some steamed broccoli. Or another example would be a couple turkey burgers (no bun) and some cottage cheese.

As far as physical activity, I didn't do much besides walking at first. Now that I've dropped some weight I can do more. For the last couple months I've been either biking or doing the eliptical machine for at least a half hour every day. I'm still too fat to jog, but sometimes I go for a walk and do small jogs during it. I can job about 100 yards before I have to stop. I'm very weak overall. I can't do a pushup (I've never done one before) or a pullup/chinup. My lower body is fairly strong I think, since it's been carrying me around all this time but my upper body is pathetic.

I want to get a gym membership soon. I want to get serious about adding some weights to the cardio I already do. I dont know where to start. I've browsed at some books and done some reading here. I feel a bit overwhelmed with all the info. I dont know how to do any of the lifts. I've posted this same post on another forum I visit and they suggested a few things like visiting http://www.exrx.net/ to learn the excercises.

My goal is to lose weight first. I'm hoping to keep some muscle and if I add some new muscle that wouldn't be a bad thing. After I've reached a normal human weight then I think I'd like to keep up the training and maybe someday be "buff." Its hard to even type that with a straight face since its such a foreign concept to me, having been a fatty forever.

Well, that was kind of long winded, and I hope I didn't leave anything out. What do you guys think? Can you point me the at any good basic starter books or other info to get started?

Thanks
-Marshall

Forget the gym. I normally don't suggest this, but read my e-book http://www.averagetoelite.com/truefitness.pdf

Then check out these links

I would start you with a 12 kilo

http://www.dragondoor.com/v103.html

Then check this woman out, she lost over a hundred pounds doing mainly kettlebell swings
http://tracyrif.blogspot.com

Plus you save a lot of money not paying for a gym that is mostly worthless anyway.

Kettlebell swings alone, run at intervals for 20-30 minutes a day will do the trick for you.

Thanks for the input. I've never heard of kettlebells before now! I'm going to read your e-book today at work.

Here is an interesting read for you, "Neanderthin" by Ray Audettee.

Quick comments on your posted diet. Add massive amounts of vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale.

Add good fats like almonds, olive oil, ground flax seed.

Get more fiber.

You are not eating enough IMO.

You've come to the right place!
