Message To Gym Owners: Crank Up The A/C -- PLEASE!!
Maybe it's just me - but as far as I'm concerned, EVERY gym I've been to has the A/C about 3 to 5 degrees too hot.
I'm always asking them to cool the place down, and I always get a quizzical look that says "Wha- it's plenty cool in here!" (Well, dummy, you're standing behind a desk!)
I once went to a gym that had perfect temperature - I asked the owner what it was set at, and he didn't know - the thermostats were malfunctioning and he wanted to warm the place up!

Yeah, the gym I am going to now just opened a couple months ago, and none of the tread mill, olipticals, or steppers had fans on them. They recently installed some oscilating fans above that area, so at least now it is bearable.
The rest of the gym isn't bad though. (for Texas..... in August)

I agree with O/P. Set it to 68. lol
Makes me work out harder and not need as long of breaks.
Tell the owner at least it will help him/her save money on water usage...

A major problem is that many gym owners are primarily business people, do not have any background in exercise physiology and have very little understanding of the fact that when one is working out rigorously their core temperature rises, necessitating the elevation of the external temperature to cool down!

"Air Con" .... picture fond memories and smiley face.... I think there is some at my gym... but I have a suspicion it doesn't work.... I'll let you know in a couple of weeks when the temperature has gone from the mid 20C (70F) to somewhere around 40C (+100F)....not looking forward to that.... I'm oen of those people who thought the best thing about Scotland was the climate... where we call 20C in teh summer a heat wave....

I can't stand going to the gym when it's really hot. I end up getting sick and I start to feel woosie. That is one of the reasons why we go in the morining.
I hate it when it's spring and we have a hot day and the heat is still on OR it's 100 degrees outside and the AC is set at 80.

I've to mixed feelings about that.
When I do cardio, I sweat like a pig on a spit at a Texas barbecue.
I'd really like a little fan or something to dry off the sweat as I'm suffering.
Cooler there would be better.
OTOH, In the weight area, I don't want to cool off too much. The muscles should stay warm for the lifts and it always seems like the weight area is cooler than the cardio area.
Cooler in cadio land,
Warmer in the lifting area.

My gym doesn't have air conditioning - and I'm in the desert - I think its best to work out in the heat - the temps here are usually in the 90s

I'm in the hospitality business, and one thing you figure out real quick is that one persons North Pole is another person's Africa. A good business man tries to keep it somewhere in the middle for everyone. If alot of gym goers are complaining, a good gym will turn the thermostat down. Like Confuscius say though...one drop or rain, doesn't make a rainstorm.

I prefer it a little on the warm side when I'm working out - but when it's over 90 outside with the sun shining in the big plate glass windows that chain gyms seem to favor nowdays, it gets too hot for me - and exercising in that heat makes me feel sick.
(Which is part of the reason I prefer to workout after the sun has gone down.)

I'm fine with the temp in my gym, but the temp in the locker room is frequently unbearable. The locker room is small and gets very little air circulation. It's always hot, even in the winter. If I didn't workout on my lunch hour I wouldn't mind, but when you've got to get back to work and you're soaking your shirt, it sucks!

My gym hasn't had a/c for most of the summer. There are huge warehouse fans, but they just move the hot air around. I know that if I worked out in my garage it would be hot. But I pay to work out in a commercial gym. I thought part of my membership dues were for climate control.

Toughen' up! I absolutely hate to sweat a drop unless I workout, but when I do workout, the more the better, so the gym is the only place I don't need AC.
