Someday is really getting her butt kicked lately....
.....so many of you know Shelli has been having a rough go of it lately as we thought she tore her quad muscle, or actually adductor, about 8 weeks ago. She has been in a ton of pain and was not improving very much.....the physical therapist was baffled as to why her progress seemed so slow. Anyhow, we went to Vegas to watch a couple of friends compete in the USA's last Wednesday. I have never seen her so uncomfortable....her leg was swollen up to twice it's size and was bright red and very firm up by her inner thigh. But being the mule she is, she just sucked it up and limped around everywhere. She was literally in tears nearly twice a day from the pain and I kind of felt helpless as the Advil and Vicoden seemed to be doing very little. We got home Tuesday and I spent the day running her around to doctors trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Why does a tear start getting much worst after 5 weeks when the person isn't in the gym and is resting quite a bit?! Well, her ortho wanted another MRI as he was concerned that the injured area had become infected somehow and an abcess had formed. So we scheduled one for the following day along with more bloodwork to find out. We never made it to the MRI the next day because around midnight while going to the bathroom an area in her groin just burst open and shot blood and puss out for a solid 30 seconds. It was still coming out at a good pace when I got up to see what she was yelling about. Talk about some scary **** seeing your spouse there white as a ghost bleeding profusely. I put a towel on it and applied some pressure, got her shorts on and took her to the ER. Around 4am or so the doc came in to try and drain the remainder of the abcess....not a pretty sight and a pain I hope none of you ever experience. Shelli really is a tough nut to be able to hack someone shoving a blunt instrument into a very tender and painful area and start poking under the skin a couple of inches in....trust me when I say it was painful for me and I was only watching trying to make sure she didn't punch the doc in the face! lol He didn't feel he could drain it all, so he called the surgeon on call and was told to admit her. I've now spent the better part of two days at the hospital with her as they've had her on intravenous antibiotics to clear up the infection, which was massive (throughout her groin and thigh all the way around to her ass). Her temp finally started coming down today and they removed the packing from the open wound (they leave them open by stuffing sterile latex in there until they know for sure they don't need to go in). When I left tonight she actually was able to roll over on her side and lay her head on my chest for the first time, so she is starting to finally feel better. Sadly though, the root of her infection turned out to be a cloth bladder sling that she had done about 3 years ago, meaning it needs to be removed. They go in pretty easily (although they kill your sex life for 8 weeks! man did that suck!!!!! lol), but they don't come out very easily. So I am now in the process of trying to schedule her for surgery in Boston sometime in the next week or two to have this done. Just what we need as we are moving in two weeks, but hey, it could be worse....she could've been crushed under a bridge in MN....at least I know she'll come out of this better and stronger than ever. And although she'll be out of the gym for another couple of months, I would bet anything we'll see her on the stage again in May because no one, and I mean NO ONE, is more stubborn and pig-headed than that woman! So get well Shell as I miss my favorite training partner something fierce!!

I've been wondering how you two have been doing since your posts have been sparse. What a terrible thing to have happen. The big thing she has in her favor physically is she's in terrific shape; she has to be to tolerate that serious an infection. My best wishes go out to her for a speedy recovery. Take care of yourself & the kids too Mr. S.

I'm so sorry to read this ... and to think what Shelli had to endure before the rupture ... and you having to see what your spouse was going through. I hope she's well on her way to a full recovery soon and you both feel better ... both physically and mentally.

damn, that sounds excruciating...
I'm glad to hear it's being taken care of and she's improving... and very glad the infection didn't become septic - especially since it had spread so much.

OMG Steve, I cannot believe that woman could even function with all of that infection inside of her. That is one tough woman you have got there to manage to move in spite of the pain. Had to be scary as **** to walk in and see your wife like that. I am so sorry Steve. Tell Shelli I am praying for a fast speedy recovery for her. Hang in there your self too and will be prayin for you and the kids. You two are really something together ya know that? Just remember to tell her even though shes had alot of stuff going on with her that shes still a real keeper!
