i wondered this too. most are gonna say eat some oats and eggs an hour prior. but i couldnt do it. that would mean i would have to be up at 4am cooking breakfast. at worst cooking the night prior and eating at 5am in order to digest and be at the gym at 6am.

Stallone did this on purpose to lose muscle mass for one of his Rocky movies.

Have fun.

Not eating before you work out in the morning is a good way to loose fat. I work out as soon as I get up at 5:30am. I take some amino acid caplets so muscle doesn't break down and I also get jacked up on caffeine. I am able to work hard for an hour and a half and then eat afterwords.

I agree, at least hit yourself with a shot of whey. You've fasted for 8 hours if you've gotten a good nights sleep. You need to get some protien to your muscles anyway, not to mention before you work out.

It is useless for cardio as well. Substrate oxidized during cardio makes no difference to fat loss in the longer run.

The body needs carbs to get out of the fed state. A protein shake/Amino Acids can help prevent protein breakdown, but can still do nothing for the major issue here - Cortisol, which is anyway high because of being in the fasted state, and will increase very significantly with exercise. EAT

I get up at 4:45 and microwave a cup of oatmeal and drink 2 scoops of ON in water or skim milk. Then I'm at the gym by 6:00, lift heavy (Rippetoe's) until 7:00 and then do some light cardio. Follow up with a PWO drink right after that and then wait an hour to have a cup of oatmeal and 2 scoops of ON in water or skim milk, raspberries and banana. Good to go.

Granted, I've been working out that early since late 2002 so I'm used to eating that early.
